US, UK, EU, and many other nationalities need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) — NZD $17 via app or $23 online. Valid for 2 years, multiple entries up to 90 days each. Also pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL, $35). Apply at least 72 hours before travel. Australian citizens are exempt.
Wellington averages 173 days of gale-force wind per year. It's charming in a wild way but can ruin unprepared visitors' days. Always carry a windproof jacket (not an umbrella — they break immediately). The Wellington Wind Walk art installation on the waterfront celebrates it. Locals say 'you can't beat Wellington on a good day' — and it's true. Just dress for both seasons in one day.
New Zealand helped invent the flat white (along with Australia — don't mention this debate to locals). Wellington's coffee standards are exceptionally high — weak or burnt coffee is rare. Order a flat white, long black, or pour-over. Drip/filter coffee is uncommon. Tip: if a café is full of locals at 3PM on a Tuesday, the coffee is good. Havana, Flight, and Customs are the holy trinity.
The compact CBD means most attractions are within 15 minutes' walk. The Metlink bus network covers wider suburbs (Snapper card for discounted fares). No train in the CBD but commuter trains serve Hutt Valley and Kapiti Coast. Airport bus 91 runs every 20 minutes ($5). Taxis to the airport: $30-40 NZD. Uber works well. No need for a rental car unless leaving the city.
Te Papa is free. The Botanic Garden is free. The city gallery is free. Walking Cuba Street is free. Mt. Victoria lookout is free. Wellington becomes expensive at restaurants and hotels — but the free attractions are world-class. Hostel: $35-50/night. Mid-range hotel: $120-200. Flat white coffee: $5-6. Restaurant dinner: $25-50. Budget $80-120 NZD/day.
Wellington sits on the active Wellington Fault. Small earthquakes are common and rarely dangerous. If you feel a strong quake: Drop, Cover, Hold — get under a table, cover your head, hold on until shaking stops. Do not run outside. Hotels have evacuation procedures. The 2016 Kaikōura earthquake was the last major event. Te Papa has an excellent earthquake exhibit explaining the science.
Travel GuidesOne is bigger. One is better. An honest comparison of New Zealand's two main cities — and why the underdog wins.
Travel GuidesA free world-class museum, wild kiwi 10 minutes from downtown, and more craft breweries per capita than anywhere in the country. Wellington punches above its weight.
TipsYour umbrella will break. Te Papa needs 4 hours, not 2. And the flat white here will ruin you for coffee everywhere else.
