Last rou jia mo(20 minutes)

Airport transfer(1.5 hours)
Airport shuttle from Railway Station (25 CNY). Or Metro Line 14 to airport. Allow 2.5 hours before international flights
Xi'an Xianyang Airport (XIY) qualifies for the 144-hour transit visa-free policy. Citizens of 54 countries can enter for up to 6 days when transiting to a third country. You can travel within Shaanxi province and the connected 144-hour zone. Must have a confirmed onward international ticket.
XIY airport is 47km from the city center. The airport shuttle bus to Xi'an Railway Station takes 1-1.5 hours (25 CNY). Taxi costs 120-150 CNY. Metro Line 14 connects to the city metro network. When leaving, allow 2+ hours for the journey to the airport. During rush hour, the expressway crawls.
The city wall rental period is 100 minutes, which is tight for the full 14km loop if you stop for photos. Start cycling at least 2 hours before closing time. Sunset (around 6-7PM in summer) is the best time — the wall empties and the light on the Tang-era Bell and Drum Towers is gorgeous. Return bikes at the same gate you rented from, or pay a 20 CNY surcharge for different-gate returns.
The main drag of Huimin Jie has tourist-inflated prices. Walk into the side alleys (Dapi Yuan, Xiyang Shi) for the same food at half the price. A rou jia mo should cost 10-15 CNY, not 25. The deeper into the neighborhood you go, the more authentic and cheaper the food gets. Locals eat at stalls without English menus.
Avoid anyone at the train station offering 'private tours' to the Terracotta Warriors — these typically include long stops at overpriced jade or terracotta replica factories. Take the official green tourist bus 5 (306) from the east side of Xi'an Railway Station plaza (8 CNY direct, 1 hour). The bus drops you at the museum entrance. Inside, hire an official guide at the ticket office.
The character 'biang' is one of the most complex Chinese characters (58 strokes) and cannot be typed on any keyboard. The noodles are hand-slapped into belt-wide strips and served with chili oil, garlic, and vinegar. Order 'you po che mian' (oil-splashed torn noodles) at any stall showing the biang character. A bowl costs 12-20 CNY. The theatrics of the noodle-slapping are as impressive as the taste.
StoriesXi'an was the capital of 13 dynasties and the gateway to the Silk Road. Walk its streets and you're walking through Chinese history itself.
TipsThe Terracotta Warriors tour scam. The biangbiang noodle ordering trick. The city wall bike rental hack. Everything you need before you go.
StoriesI came for the Terracotta Army and stayed for the biangbiang noodles. Seven days of cycling city walls, navigating the Muslim Quarter, and eating my body weight in lamb.
