Grab (Southeast Asia's Uber) works reliably for cars and motorbikes. A becak (bicycle rickshaw) ride along Malioboro costs 20,000-30,000 IDR — agree on the price before boarding. For Borobudur and Prambanan, hire a private driver for the day (400,000-500,000 IDR / ~$26-33). The Trans Jogja bus covers the city for 3,500 IDR per ride.

Both Borobudur and Prambanan require covered shoulders and knees. Sarongs are provided at Borobudur but not always at Prambanan — bring your own. Remove shoes inside the Kraton. When visiting Javanese homes, remove shoes at the door and accept offered tea or snacks — refusing is considered rude.
At Borobudur and Prambanan, friendly locals may offer to 'show you around for free' or 'practice their English.' This often ends with a request to visit their friend's batik shop where you'll face high-pressure sales. Politely decline unsolicited guides. Official guides wear ID badges and charge fixed rates (100,000-200,000 IDR for 2 hours).
Merapi is one of the world's most active volcanoes and erupts regularly. Check the BPPTKG (volcanic monitoring agency) website for current alert levels. At Level 2 or above, the exclusion zone expands. Jeep tours to destroyed villages operate even at elevated levels but summit approaches close. Travel insurance should cover volcanic disruption.
StoriesBorobudur at dawn, batik in the afternoon, gudeg for dinner, and a volcano looming over everything. A week in the city Indonesians call Jogja.
Travel GuidesYes, Borobudur is incredible. But Jogja has underground caves, midnight gudeg kitchens, volcano jeep tours, and silver workshops you shouldn't miss.
