The Complete Guide to Koh Lipe: Thailand's Maldives on a Budget
Koh Lipe gets called "Thailand's Maldives," and while I normally roll my eyes at comparison names, this one actually works. The water clarity, the white sand, the coral quality — it genuinely rivals the Maldives. But at a fraction of the cost. And with street food.
Overview
Koh Lipe is a tiny island in the Tarutao National Marine Park, in Thailand's far south near the Malaysian border. About 800 permanent residents (the Urak Lawoi sea gypsy community). No cars. No roads. Three beaches. One Walking Street. And some of the best snorkeling in Thailand.
Best Time to Visit
November to April. Full stop. The island partially shuts down during monsoon (May-October) — ferries stop running, many resorts close, and seas are rough. Peak season is December-February. Shoulder months (November and March-April) have better prices and fewer people.
Getting There
From mainland Thailand: Fly to Hat Yai (HDY), then minivan to Pak Bara pier (2 hours, THB 300), then speedboat to Koh Lipe (2 hours, THB 600-750). Total from Bangkok: 7-8 hours.
From Langkawi, Malaysia: Ferry (1.5 hours, MYR 120-150 / ~$27-33). A popular island-hopping route.
Important: There's no pier on Koh Lipe. Speedboats anchor offshore and longtail boats shuttle you to the beach. You wade through knee-deep water with your luggage. Use waterproof bags. The transfer costs THB 50/person.
Where to Stay
Sunrise Beach: The best beach. Crystal water, great snorkeling right off shore. Most accommodation here is mid-range to upscale. THB 1,500-5,000/night.
Pattaya Beach: More developed, closer to Walking Street. Budget to mid-range. THB 800-3,000/night.
Sunset Beach: Quietest, most undeveloped. A few small resorts. THB 1,000-3,000/night.
Budget options: Simple fan rooms and bungalows start at THB 800 in peak season. Book ahead — the island is small and fills up.
What to Do
Snorkel Off Sunrise Beach
The house reef starts 20 meters from shore. Coral, clownfish, parrotfish, pufferfish. No boat needed. Free (bring your own gear or rent for THB 100-150/day).
Day Trip to Koh Rok
Twin islands with Thailand's best coral and up to 30m visibility. Speedboat tour THB 1,500-2,000/person including lunch and park fee. Hawksbill turtles common. The beach is postcard-perfect.
Hike Koh Adang Viewpoint
Longtail to neighboring Koh Adang (THB 100-200, 10 minutes). The 40-minute hike to the viewpoint rewards with a panorama of Koh Lipe and surrounding islands. Challenging but spectacular.
Walk the Three Beaches
Sunrise (east, sunrise), Pattaya (south, social), Sunset (west, quiet). Walk the coastal trails between them — 10-20 minutes each. Different character, different vibe, same beautiful water.
Walking Street
Sandy path from Pattaya to Sunrise Beach. Dive shops, restaurants, bars. Comes alive at sunset. Fresh seafood barbecue from THB 200. Best pad thai at Pooh Bar.
Tarutao National Marine Park
Day trips to Koh Tarutao island visit the former pirate hideout and political prison. THB 200 park entry for foreigners. Crocodile Cave and Ao Son beach are highlights.
What to Eat
Walking Street seafood is the move. Point at the fish display, they grill it. Whole grilled fish from THB 200. Pad thai THB 60-80. Seafood tom yum THB 120-200.
The local Chao Leh restaurants in the village interior often have the best-value meals — rice dishes for THB 60-80.

Safety
Koh Lipe is very safe. No cars means no traffic danger. Watch for boats when swimming — stay within designated swim zones. The longtail transfers can be bumpy in shoulder season. Use reef-safe sunscreen — the coral ecosystem is fragile.
Essential Tips
Bring cash from mainland. ATMs exist but charge THB 220 per withdrawal. Many places don't take cards.
Waterproof bags are essential. For the longtail transfer.
Respect the Chao Leh community. Their village is not a tourist attraction.
Book accommodation ahead in December-February. The island is tiny and fills up.
Water shoes recommended for rocky paths between beaches.
No boat service May-October. Don't plan a monsoon visit.
