Koh Lipe has its own immigration checkpoint — if arriving from Langkawi (Malaysia), you clear Thai immigration on the beach. Bring a pen for arrival cards. Standard Thai visa rules apply: 60 days visa-free for most Western nationalities. The immigration office is near Pattaya Beach and can have long queues in peak season.
Speedboats run from Pak Bara pier (2 hours, THB 600-750, ~$17-21) — the most common route. Ferries from Langkawi, Malaysia (1.5 hours, MYR 120-150, ~$27-33) are popular for island-hopping. From Bangkok, fly to Hat Yai (HDY) then minivan to Pak Bara (2 hours, THB 300). No airport on the island. Boats don't run May-October.
Koh Lipe is tiny — you can walk across it in 20 minutes. There are no cars or motorbikes for rent. Everything is on foot or by longtail boat to nearby beaches and snorkeling spots. Wear water shoes for rocky paths between beaches. Beach-hop by walking the coastal trails.
Everything costs more on Koh Lipe because it's shipped in by boat. Budget rooms THB 800-1,500 (~$23-43), mid-range THB 2,000-5,000 (~$57-143), meals THB 100-300 (~$3-9). ATMs exist but often charge THB 220 per withdrawal. Bring cash from the mainland. Many places accept QR payment (Thai bank apps) but few take credit cards.
There's no pier — speedboats anchor offshore and longtail boats shuttle you to the beach. You'll wade through knee-deep water with your luggage. Use waterproof bags for electronics. The transfer costs THB 50/person. Seas can be rough in shoulder season (late October, early November) — sit in the center of the boat.
Koh Lipe is the ancestral home of the Urak Lawoi (Chao Leh/sea gypsy) people. Their village is in the center of the island. Be respectful when walking through — don't photograph people without asking. The community faces pressure from tourism development. Support local Chao Leh restaurants and boat operators when possible.
Travel GuidesHouse reefs off the beach, 30-meter visibility at Koh Rok, hawksbill turtle encounters, and dive sites in a national marine park. Koh Lipe's underwater world is the main event.
