The Complete Koh Tao Guide: Dive, Hike, and Eat Your Way Through Thailand's Gulf Island Gem
Koh Tao is 21 square kilometers of granite boulders, coral reefs, and dive flags. This tiny island in the Gulf of Thailand has built its entire identity around one thing — underwater — and it does that one thing better than almost anywhere on Earth.
But Koh Tao above water is more interesting than most people realize. Hidden viewpoints, boulder-strewn bays, and a food scene that's evolved well beyond banana pancakes. Here's the full guide.
Overview
Koh Tao sits in the Gulf of Thailand, roughly 70km from the mainland. Population: about 2,000 permanent residents, swelling to 10,000+ with tourists and dive industry workers. The island is small enough to motorbike around in under an hour, but the terrain — steep hills, dirt roads, and granite outcrops — makes it feel bigger.
Sairee Beach on the west coast is the main strip: 1.7km of bars, dive shops, restaurants, and accommodation. Chalok Baan Kao on the south coast is quieter. Mae Haad is where the ferries dock.
Best Time to Visit
March to September: Best overall. Calm seas, 15-30m visibility, warm water (28-30°C). March-April for whale sharks. June-August is peak tourist season.
October to December: Monsoon. Rough seas, reduced visibility, some dive sites inaccessible. Prices drop 30-40%. Still diveable on calm days.
January to February: Cool season. Good conditions, moderate crowds. Water temperature drops to 26-27°C.
From Surat Thani (URT): Lomprayah or Seatran, 4-5 hours including bus transfer, 700-1,000 THB (~$20-28)
From Chumphon: Lomprayah, 1.5 hours, 600 THB (~$17)
From Bangkok: Night bus to Chumphon + morning ferry, total 12 hours, 900-1,200 THB (~$25-34). Or fly to Samui and ferry.
Book ferries at lomprayah.com or 12go.asia. Departures are weather-dependent in monsoon.

What to Do
Diving (The Main Event)
Koh Tao is the cheapest place in the world for PADI certification:
PADI Open Water: 8,500-10,000 THB (~$240-280) for 3-4 days. Includes all dives, equipment, and often free accommodation at the dive school.
Advanced Open Water: 8,000-9,500 THB (~$224-266)
Fun dives (certified): 800-1,200 THB (~$22-34) per dive
Sail Rock trip: 2,500-3,500 THB (~$70-98) for two dives
There are 70+ dive shops on the island. Reputation matters more than price — check reviews, ask about instructor ratios (4:1 maximum is good), and visit the shop before booking.
Top dive sites: Sail Rock (the best — barracuda, batfish, whale sharks in season), Chumphon Pinnacle (large pelagics), Twins (gorgeous coral), Japanese Gardens (beginner-friendly, seahorses).
Snorkeling
You don't need to dive to enjoy Koh Tao's underwater world:
Shark Bay (Thian Og): Blacktip reef sharks in the shallows. Walk from Chalok. Entry: 100 THB (~$2.80).
Tanote Bay: Shore snorkeling among granite boulders. Free beach access.
Aow Leuk: Coral gardens just offshore. Entry: 100 THB.
Hiking
John-Suwan Viewpoint: 30-minute hike from Chalok to panoramic views of Shark Bay and the south coast. Entry: 50 THB (~$1.40). Best at sunset.
Mango Viewpoint: The highest accessible point. 360-degree panorama. Reach by steep dirt road (motorbike or walk). Entry: 100 THB. Mango smoothies at the top.
West Coast Viewpoints: Several unmarked trails from Sairee lead to clifftop viewpoints with sunset vistas. Ask locals or follow the hand-painted signs.
Freediving
Koh Tao has become a major freediving hub. Apnea Total and Blue Immersion offer courses from beginner to instructor level. SSI Freediving Level 1: 7,000-9,000 THB (~$196-252) for 2 days.
Food
Street food behind Sairee Beach: The road running parallel to the beach, one block inland, has food stalls serving Thai classics at Thai prices. Pad krapao (basil stir-fry with fried egg): 60-80 THB ($1.70-2.20). Green curry: 70-90 THB ($2-2.50). These are the same prices you'd pay in Bangkok.
Barracuda Restaurant (Mae Haad): The best Western-style restaurant on the island. Steaks, pasta, burgers — but done properly. Mains: 200-350 THB (~$5.60-9.80).
Pranee Kitchen (Sairee): Thai home cooking. The massaman curry is the best on the island. 90 THB (~$2.50).
Cappuccino (Sairee): Italian-run. The pizzas are genuinely good. 200-300 THB (~$5.60-8.40).
Night market (Mae Haad, Thursdays): Rotating vendors with Thai food, seafood BBQ, and desserts. Budget 200 THB for a full meal.

Safety
Motorbike accidents are the biggest risk. The roads are steep, unpaved in sections, and tourists drive too fast. Wear a helmet. Drive sober.
Drink spiking has been reported on Koh Tao. Don't leave drinks unattended. Stay with people you trust.
Reef-safe sunscreen only. Chemical sunscreen damages the coral that the island's entire economy depends on. Mineral-based, reef-safe products only.
Decompression sickness: Follow your dive tables. Don't fly within 24 hours of diving.

The Verdict
Koh Tao does one thing extraordinarily well and several things surprisingly well. The diving is why you come — the price, the quality, and the variety of sites are unmatched in Thailand. But the hiking, the food, and the general island atmosphere keep you longer than you planned.
Two common mistakes: staying only on Sairee (explore Tanote, Shark Bay, Chalok), and not hiking (John-Suwan at sunset is worth the sweat).
Budget five days minimum. You'll need two for diving, one for snorkeling/hiking, one for rest, and one because you won't want to leave.
Beyond Thailand, the small-island diving around Nusa Lembongan off Bali — mola mola, manta rays, and the same divers-meet-backpackers vibe — is Koh Tao's closest cousin in Indonesia.
Closer to home, Koh Chang gives you a rawer, junglier Thai island if Sairee starts to feel too built-up.
