Koh Tao's premier dive site — a granite pinnacle rising from 40m depth to 15m above the surface, midway between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. Famous for its vertical swim-through chimney, schooling barracuda, batfish, and whale shark sightings (March-May). Boat trip: 1,200-1,800 THB (~$34-50) for two dives. Advanced Open Water recommended. Visibility routinely exceeds 20m. Book a day in advance during peak season.
A picturesque east-coast bay framed by giant granite boulders with excellent shore snorkeling among coral gardens and blacktip reef sharks. Free beach access. Snorkel gear rental: 150-200 THB (~$4-5.60). The cliff jumping rock on the south side is popular (3-5m drops into deep water). A treehouse bar perched on the rocks serves cocktails with a view. Best snorkeling: morning before waves pick up.
Koh Tao is the cheapest place in the world to get PADI certified — Open Water courses run 8,500-10,000 THB (~$240-280) for 3-4 days including all dives, gear, materials, and often free accommodation. Over 70 dive shops compete for your business. Top-rated shops: Crystal Dive, Big Blue, Ban's Diving. Book directly for best prices. The warm, calm waters and shallow sites make it ideal for beginners.
A moderately challenging 30-minute hike from Chalok Baan Kao Bay to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking both Shark Bay and the southern coastline. Entry: 50 THB (~$1.40). The trail winds through boulders and jungle — wear proper shoes (not flip-flops). Early morning or late afternoon for best light and cooler temperatures. On clear days you can see Koh Phangan to the south.
A sheltered bay on the south coast where juvenile blacktip reef sharks patrol the shallows — you can spot them from the beach. Entry: 100 THB (~$2.80). Snorkeling here is excellent with healthy coral and sea turtles feeding on seagrass. Best viewed at low tide when sharks come closer to shore. The bay is also a nesting area for hawksbill turtles. Respectful distance is mandatory.
The highest accessible viewpoint on Koh Tao with a 360-degree panorama of the island, surrounding sea, and neighboring islands. Reach it by a steep dirt road (4x4 or walk — regular scooters struggle). Entry: 100 THB includes a mango smoothie at the top. Open 9AM-5:30PM. The road is the adventure — seriously steep and rutted. Walk if your scooter skills aren't expert level.

60-day visa-free entry for citizens of 57 countries (as of 2024). Koh Tao is part of Surat Thani province — no additional permits needed. If you overstay to finish a dive course, the fine is 500 THB/day payable at the airport. Immigration occasionally does spot checks on the island.
From Koh Samui: Lomprayah catamaran (1.5h, 600 THB / ~$17) or Seatran Discovery (1.5h, similar price). From Surat Thani (mainland): night ferry (8h, 600 THB, includes bunk) or Lomprayah bus+catamaran combo (5h, 1,050 THB / ~$30). From Bangkok: joint bus+ferry tickets from Khao San Road agencies (12-14h, 900-1,200 THB). Book Lomprayah at lomprayah.com for guaranteed schedules.
Most dive schools offer free or heavily discounted accommodation if you book a course with them. An Open Water course (8,500-10,000 THB) with 3 nights free accommodation is a better deal than paying separately. Compare shops in person on Sairee Beach. Food on Koh Tao is pricier than the mainland — expect 80-150 THB for Thai food, 200-350 THB at Western restaurants.
Koh Tao's roads are notoriously steep, unpaved in parts, and poorly lit. Multiple tourist injuries occur daily. The road to Tanote Bay and Mango Viewpoint are the worst — near-vertical in places. Scooter rental is 200-300 THB/day but your insurance almost certainly won't cover an accident. Walk or hire a longtail boat to remote beaches instead.
Koh Tao has a documented problem with drink spiking at some bars, particularly on Sairee Beach. Never leave drinks unattended, always watch your drink being poured, and go out with friends. Avoid accepting free drinks from strangers. If you feel suddenly intoxicated beyond what you've consumed, seek help immediately. The island's hospital is basic — serious cases are transferred to Koh Samui.
Koh Tao's reefs are under pressure from tourism. Use reef-safe sunscreen (no oxybenzone or octinoxate) — many dive shops sell it. Don't touch, stand on, or take coral. The island's marine conservation programs (like the New Heaven Reef Conservation Program) welcome volunteers for reef restoration if you're staying longer than a week.
A Thai dive instructor who's logged 5,000+ dives shares what the reefs look like from underwater, which dive shops to trust, and the one thing tourists do that damages coral for decades.
Everything you need to know about Thailand's dive capital — from choosing a PADI school to the best viewpoint hikes and the street food worth crossing the island for.
