Jerash vs Petra: Which Jordan Ruin Should You Prioritize?
Jordan has two world-class archaeological sites, and most tourists only visit one. Petra — the rose-red Nabataean city carved into sandstone cliffs — gets the headlines, the Instagram posts, and the Indiana Jones references. Jerash — one of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities anywhere — gets archaeology enthusiasts and empty colonnaded streets.
I've spent significant time at both. They're completely different experiences.
Scale: Petra Wins
Petra is vast — 60 square kilometers of temples, tombs, and facades carved into sandstone. You need 2-3 days to see it properly. The Treasury (Al-Khazneh) alone justifies the trip. The Monastery (Ad-Deir) requires 800 steps and rewards with a facade even larger than the Treasury.
Jerash is large for a Roman site but compact compared to Petra. You can see everything in 3-4 hours.
Winner: Petra
Preservation: Jerash Wins
Jerash is one of the best-preserved Roman cities outside Italy. You can walk 800 meters of the original Cardo Maximus with chariot ruts carved into the limestone. The Oval Plaza's 56 Ionic columns stand essentially intact. The South Theater's acoustics still work — clap in the center and hear the echo bounce off 3,000 seats.
Petra is more dramatic but also more ruined. The carved facades are stunning, but the interiors are largely empty caves. The colonnaded street is a shadow of its Roman-era grandeur.
Winner: Jerash
Unique Experiences: Jerash Wins (surprisingly)
The RACE show (Roman Army and Chariot Experience) at Jerash's hippodrome runs daily at 11AM, 1PM, and 3PM — 45 minutes of chariot races, gladiator fights, and legionary drills in an original Roman arena. JOD 12 (~$17). There is nowhere else on Earth you can watch chariot racing in a real hippodrome.
Petra has the famous Treasury reveal at the end of the Siq (narrow canyon), Petra by Night (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday — JOD 17), and the hike to the Monastery. All exceptional.
Winner: Jerash (the chariot races tip the scale)
Crowds: Jerash Wins
Petra receives 4,000+ visitors daily in peak season. The Treasury plaza can feel like a theme park. Jerash sees a fraction of that — even midday, you'll find quiet sections.
Winner: Jerash
Photography: Petra Wins
The rose-colored sandstone, the dramatic Siq entrance, and the sheer scale of the Treasury and Monastery make Petra one of the most photogenic places on Earth.
Jerash is handsome but less dramatic — columns and paving stones photograph well in golden hour, less well at midday.
Winner: Petra

The Jordan Pass (JOD 70 basic tier from jordanpass.jo) covers both sites plus waives the visa fee. Must stay 3+ nights in Jordan.

My recommendation: buy the Jordan Pass and do both. Jerash as a half-day trip from Amman, Petra as a 2-day destination. They complement each other perfectly — Nabataean vs Roman, sandstone vs limestone, carved vs built.
For more Jordan, the Dead Sea and Wadi Rum complete the classic circuit.
