Komodo National Park isn't the easiest destination to plan. Here are answers to the questions that trip people up.
Q: How do I get to Komodo?
Fly to Labuan Bajo (LBJ) from Bali (1 hour) on Citilink, Wings Air, or Nam Air — IDR 600,000-1,500,000 one-way (~$40-95). Flights from Jakarta on Batik Air. Airport is 5 minutes from town.
Q: How much does the park cost?
IDR 350,000 (~$22) per person per visit for foreign tourists, plus IDR 100,000 ranger guide fee. Budget IDR 500,000+ per person for a day in the park. Keep your ticket — it covers multiple islands on the same day.
Q: Is it safe with the dragons?
With a ranger, yes. Komodo dragons are ambush predators with venomous bites — never approach within 5 meters. Stay with your ranger at all times. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Don't bring food. Women who are menstruating must inform rangers (dragons detect blood from 5km).
Q: Rinca or Komodo Island?
Rinca is closer to Labuan Bajo (2 hours vs 3.5) and has more frequent dragon sightings. Komodo Island has a larger dragon population but requires more travel time. Most day trips visit Rinca.
Q: Do I need to dive?
No. Day trips for non-divers cover dragon trekking, Padar viewpoint, and Pink Beach snorkeling — a full and spectacular day. Diving is amazing but not required.
Q: What's a day trip vs liveaboard?
Day trips from Labuan Bajo: IDR 1-2 million/person ($65-130), hit 3-4 spots, return same day. Liveaboards: 3-4 days, IDR 6-15 million ($400-950), reach remote dive sites, better for serious divers. Book liveaboards 2-3 weeks ahead minimum.
Q: When should I go?
Dry season (April-November) for best conditions. June-September peak. Manta rays best December-February. Wet season (December-March) has rougher seas and some cancellations.
Q: Can I snorkel instead of dive?
Absolutely. Pink Beach, Kanawa Island, and Mawan all have excellent snorkeling. Wear a life jacket — currents are strong. Bring your own mask if possible.
Q: How strong are the currents?
Some of Indonesia's strongest. Even experienced swimmers should wear life jackets when snorkeling. The channel between Komodo and Rinca is particularly treacherous. Follow your guide's instructions.
Q: What about drones?
Permits required and expensive (IDR 1 million+). Most day trip operators discourage them. The park is strict about enforcement.
Q: What should I bring?
Reef-safe sunscreen, reef shoes, hat, 2L water, dry bag for electronics, and snorkel mask if you own one. Light long pants for dragon treks.
Q: Visa situation?
Most nationalities get a 30-day visa on arrival for IDR 500,000 (~$32). The e-VOA can be pre-purchased at molina.imigrasi.go.id.
