Day trips from Labuan Bajo hit 3-4 spots (Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo/Rinca) for IDR 1-2 million/person (~$65-130) including lunch. For diving, 3-4 day liveaboard trips (IDR 6-15 million, ~$400-950) cover more remote sites with better visibility. Book liveaboards at least 2-3 weeks ahead in peak season.
Multiple daily flights from Bali (DPS) to Labuan Bajo (LBJ) on Citilink, Wings Air, and Nam Air — 1 hour, IDR 600,000-1,500,000 one-way (~$40-95). Flights from Jakarta available on Batik Air. Book early — flights sell out in peak season. The airport is 5 minutes from town center.
Komodo dragons are ambush predators with venomous bites. Never approach within 5 meters. Stay with your ranger at all times. Women who are menstruating must inform rangers (dragons can detect blood from 5km). Don't bring food on treks. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes on island walks.
Waters around Komodo have some of the strongest currents in Indonesia. Even experienced swimmers should wear life jackets when snorkeling. Dive only with reputable operators who check conditions. Currents can change rapidly — follow your guide's instructions. The channel between Komodo and Rinca islands is particularly treacherous.
As of 2023, Komodo National Park entry fees for foreign tourists increased to IDR 350,000 (~$22) per person per visit. A separate ranger guide fee of IDR 100,000 applies. Budget IDR 500,000+ per person for a day in the park. Keep your ticket — it covers multiple islands on the same day trip.
Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Do not touch, stand on, or break coral. Do not feed fish or turtles. Drone permits are required and expensive (IDR 1 million+). Take all trash with you — the islands have no waste facilities. Reef-safe sunscreen is strongly encouraged.
StoriesThe ranger carried a forked stick. I carried a camera and a rapidly increasing heart rate. Welcome to Komodo.
