Nice in Summer: Your June-to-September Guide to the French Riviera
Summer is when Nice becomes the postcard version of itself. The Mediterranean turns that specific shade of turquoise that gave the Cote d'Azur its name. The Promenade des Anglais fills with joggers, cyclists, and people who've mastered the art of doing nothing on a beach chair. And the light — the light that drew Matisse, Chagall, and Renoir to this coast — is at its most luminous.
Here's how to do summer Nice right.
The Weather
June through September delivers 25-30°C days, minimal rainfall, and 10-12 hours of sunshine. The water temperature climbs from 20°C in June to 24-25°C by August — perfectly swimmable. Sea breezes keep the coast comfortable even when inland Provence bakes.
July and August are peak season with corresponding crowds and prices. June and September are the sweet spot — same weather, fewer people, better value.
Summer Beach Life
Nice's beaches are public, free, and pebbled (not sand). The pebbles are smooth but water shoes (~5 EUR from any beach shop) make getting in and out more comfortable.
Private beach clubs charge 20-30 EUR for a sunbed, umbrella, and waiter service. Worth it once for the experience, but the free public sections are perfectly good.
The Promenade des Anglais stretches 7km along the Baie des Anges. Rent a Velo Bleu bike (1 EUR/day subscription + 30 minutes free per ride) and cycle it. The blue chairs along the promenade are free — grab one and people-watch.
For swimming: the water off Nice's beaches is clean and calm in summer. The beach east of Castle Hill (Plage de la Reserve) is less crowded than the main stretch.
Summer Events
Nice Jazz Festival (July) — One of the world's oldest jazz festivals, held in multiple venues across the city. Tickets from 35 EUR per day.
Bastille Day (July 14) — Fireworks over the Baie des Anges. The entire promenade fills with spectators. Arrive early for a spot.
Markets in Full Swing — Cours Saleya flower and food market (Tuesday-Sunday 6AM-1:30PM) is at its most colorful with summer produce — peaches, melons, lavender, and the region's famous rose wine.
Day Trips from Nice
Summer opens up the full Riviera for day trips:
Eze Village — Medieval hilltop village perched 427m above the sea. Bus 82 from Nice (1.50 EUR, 25 minutes). Jardin Exotique (7 EUR) has cactus gardens with 360-degree Riviera views. The Nietzsche Path hike from Eze-sur-Mer (1.5 hours) is spectacular in morning light.
Monaco — 15 minutes by train (4.40 EUR). Casino, Oceanographic Museum, Prince's Palace changing of the guard at 11:55AM. Expensive for eating but free to gawk.
Cannes — 30 minutes by train (7.60 EUR). The Croisette boulevard, film festival palais (exterior only), and Ile Sainte-Marguerite boat trip.
Antibes — 20 minutes by train (4.10 EUR). Picasso Museum (6 EUR), the best covered market on the Riviera (Marche Provencal), and Cap d'Antibes coastal walk.
Summer Food
Socca is the essential Nice summer food — a chickpea flour crepe cooked in a wood-fired oven and served hot in paper. 3-5 EUR. Chez Theresa at the Cours Saleya market and Chez Pipo (since 1923) near the port are the two definitive spots.
Salade Nicoise — The real version has tuna, anchovies, hard-boiled eggs, tomatoes, olives, and green beans. No lettuce. This is Nicois, not French-diner.
Pan Bagnat — A pressed Nicoise sandwich in a round roll, soaked in olive oil. The perfect beach lunch. 5-7 EUR from bakeries in Vieux Nice.
Rose wine — The Riviera runs on rose in summer. A glass at a cafe terrace costs 4-7 EUR. Cotes de Provence is the local appellation.
