US, UK, EU, and Canadian citizens get 90 days visa-free. Your passport must have at least 2 blank pages and 30 days validity beyond your stay. Immigration is strict about this — travelers have been denied boarding for insufficient blank pages. No visa extensions available.
Petty theft (phone snatching, car break-ins) is common. Don't walk with your phone out in busy areas like Long Street or the V&A Waterfront. Lock all items in the trunk before parking. Avoid walking alone after dark outside of well-lit restaurant strips. Use Uber — it's reliable and cheap (R50-100 across town).
Atlantic-side beaches (Camps Bay, Clifton) have water at 8-14°C — cold enough for hypothermia. The Benguela Current is relentless. False Bay beaches (Muizenberg, Fish Hoek) are warmer at 16-22°C. Rip currents exist on both sides. Only swim at beaches with lifeguards. Great white sharks are present but attacks are extremely rare.
A rental car is essential for Cape Point, Chapman's Peak, the wine region, and the Garden Route. Rentals start at ~R350/day (~$20 USD). Drive on the LEFT side — South Africa follows British road rules. The MyCiTi bus covers the airport and Atlantic Seaboard. Uber works everywhere in the city.
The favorable exchange rate makes Cape Town one of the world's best-value destinations. Fine dining: R400-800 (~$22-44 USD) per person. Quality wine: R80-200 (~$5-11 USD) per bottle at estates. A full day of activities (Table Mountain + wine tasting + dinner) can cost under $100 USD total.
Many of Cape Town's best experiences are free: hiking Lion's Head at sunrise, exploring Bo-Kaap, walking the Sea Point Promenade, watching sunset at Signal Hill, visiting the Company's Garden, and touring the Parliament buildings (free tours Mon-Fri). Green Point Park and the Noon Gun at Signal Hill are also free.
South Africa experiences scheduled power outages (load shedding) that can last 2-8 hours. Check the EskomSePush app for schedules. Most hotels and restaurants have generators or inverters. Charge devices when power is on. It's less frequent in tourist season but still possible.
Penguins on the beach, great white sharks offshore, fynbos found nowhere else on earth, and Table Mountain's 1,500 plant species. Cape Town is a nature city in disguise.
Sarah moved from Johannesburg to Cape Town in 2011 and never looked back. She has strong opinions about Table Mountain timing, wine tasting strategy, and why Camps Bay is overrated.
