Turkey uses a single visa for the entire country. US citizens need an e-visa ($50 USD) from evisa.gov.tr. Most EU citizens are visa-free for 90 days. Apply before your trip — the e-visa is linked to your passport number and processed instantly.
Two airports serve the region: Nevsehir (NAV, closer to Goreme) and Kayseri (ASR, more flights). Turkish Airlines and Pegasus fly from Istanbul (1.5 hours, from TRY 500 one-way). Airport shuttles to Goreme cost TRY 100-200. Alternatively, overnight buses from Istanbul run 10-11 hours (TRY 400-600) and are surprisingly comfortable with lie-flat seats.
While Goreme town is walkable, the valleys and underground cities are spread across 30+ km. ATV rentals from TRY 500/day are popular for valley exploration. Car rentals from TRY 800/day give more flexibility. Organized tours (Green Tour, Red Tour) cost TRY 600-1,000 and cover the main sites with a guide and lunch included.
Cappadocia is affordable apart from the balloon ride. Meals in Goreme: TRY 100-250 ($3-8). Pottery kebab (testi kebab, the local specialty): TRY 200-350. Budget cave hostels from TRY 500/night. The best experiences — hiking through valleys, watching the sunrise, exploring abandoned churches — are free.
Choose licensed operators registered with the Turkish Civil Aviation Authority. The cheapest flights often cut corners on safety. Reputable operators (Royal, Butterfly, Voyager) maintain excellent safety records. Wear warm layers (it's cold at altitude even in summer), flat shoes, and long pants for the landing. Listen carefully to the landing position briefing.
A common tourist mistake is visiting Cappadocia as a day trip from Istanbul. You need at least 2 nights: one for the balloon ride (with a backup day in case of weather cancellation) and one for exploring valleys and underground cities. Three nights is ideal. The balloon success rate drops significantly if you only have one morning to try.
Yusuf grew up in a cave house in Goreme before the tourists came. He talks about what's changed, what hasn't, and why the fairy chimneys still surprise him.
Golden vineyards, near-perfect balloon flying conditions, and hiking weather that doesn't punish you. The case for visiting Cappadocia in autumn.
The balloon ride isn't guaranteed. Not all cave hotels are actual caves. And the underground cities close earlier than you think. Here's what I learned the hard way.
