Often called the cleanest lake in the Philippines — a jade-green freshwater lake enclosed by sheer limestone cliffs on Coron Island. Reached by a 10-minute climb up 300+ steps from the boat dock. Entry: PHP 300 (~$5.50). Swimming allowed. The water is extraordinarily clear with visibility exceeding 10m. Arrive before 9AM to beat the tour-group crowds. Allow 1-2 hours.
In September 1944, US aircraft sank 12 Japanese supply ships in Coron Bay. Today, these wrecks form one of the world's best wreck diving sites. The Irako (140m cargo ship), Okikawa Maru (160m tanker), and Kogyo Maru are the most popular. Open water certification required. Two-tank dive: PHP 3,500-5,000 (~$63-90). Visibility: 10-20m. Depths: 10-40m.
Two lagoons connected by a small opening in a limestone wall — you swim or kayak through at low tide, or climb a short ladder over the rocks at high tide. The outer lagoon is saltwater, the inner is a thermocline mix (warm on top, cool below). Entry: PHP 200 (~$3.60). Part of most island-hopping tours. The turquoise water against black karst is stunning.
A surreal dive site inside a volcanic limestone crater. The water shifts from freshwater on top (28°C) to saltwater thermocline at depth (38°C at 30m) — an eerie hot-cold sensation. Named for a large barracuda skeleton found on the bottom. Great for snorkeling too. Entry: PHP 200 (~$3.60). On Coron Island, usually combined with Kayangan Lake visit.
The classic Coron day out: a bangka (outrigger boat) tour visiting 5-7 spots in a day — lagoons, snorkeling reefs, beach lunch, and hidden coves. Group tours: PHP 1,500-2,500 (~$27-45) per person including lunch. Private boat: PHP 5,000-8,000 (~$90-145) for 4-6 people. The Ultimate Tour covers Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon, and Barracuda Lake in one day.
A 700+ step concrete staircase climb to a hilltop cross overlooking Coron town, the bay, and surrounding islands. Free entry. The 20-minute climb is sweaty but the 360-degree sunset view is Coron's best land-based vantage point. Bring water and a headlamp for the descent. The base has a small food market for post-climb refreshments.
Pristine white-sand islands with crystal water and almost no development — the 'postcard Philippines' experience. Part of longer island-hopping tours or private boat charters (PHP 6,000-10,000 / ~$108-180 for a group). Malcapuya has a small entry fee (PHP 200). Bring snorkel gear. These islands are 45-60 minutes from Coron town by bangka.

Direct flights from Manila to Busuanga (USU) take 1 hour: Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines, PHP 3,000-8,000 (~$55-145) depending on season. Book early for dry-season dates. A van from the airport to Coron town costs PHP 150-200 (~$3-4). The 2GO ferry from Manila (12 hours, PHP 1,500-3,000) is a budget option but runs only twice weekly. Bangka boats are generally safe but overloading happens with budget operators. Check that life jackets are provided (not just stored). Avoid boats that look overcrowded or in poor repair. Seas can be rough June-October — confirm your operator will cancel in bad weather rather than risk the trip. Solo travelers can join group tours easily.
Coron's reefs and lakes are ecologically fragile. Use reef-safe sunscreen (no oxybenzone or octinoxate) or wear rash guards for sun protection. Some lake entrances now check sunscreen type. Coral bleaching is a growing threat. Never stand on or touch coral while snorkeling. Fins help you float without contacting the reef.
Being an island, prices are 20-40% higher than Manila or Cebu. Budget dorms: PHP 500-800 (~$9-15). Mid-range hotels: PHP 2,000-4,000 (~$36-72). Local restaurant meals: PHP 150-300 (~$3-5.50). Diving is a major expense — budget PHP 4,000-6,000 ($72-108) per day for two dives. ATMs exist but frequently run out of cash on weekends — bring backup pesos.
Coron Island (where Kayangan and Barracuda lakes are located) is the ancestral domain of the Tagbanwa people. Entry fees go to the community. Respect their rules: no littering, no removing coral or shells, no camping without permission. The lakes are sacred sites. Follow guide instructions strictly. Photography is allowed but drone flights are prohibited over the island.
