Your Coron Questions Answered: Diving, Islands, Budget, and Getting There
Coron generates questions. The diving, the logistics, the El Nido comparison — everyone asks the same dozen things. Here they are, answered properly.
How do I get to Coron?
Fly to Busuanga's Francisco B. Reyes Airport (USU). One hour. Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines, PHP 3,000-8,000 (~$55-145) depending on season. Book early for the low fares.
Alternatively: ferry from Manila (overnight, 10-12 hours, PHP 1,500-3,000). Not fast, not comfortable, but cheap. Or ferry from El Nido (3.5-4 hours, PHP 1,800-2,500).
From Busuanga airport to Coron town: van transfer (30 min), usually PHP 150-300 or included in hotel pickup.
Do I need a diving certification to see the wrecks?
Not all of them. The Lusong Gunboat sits in 3-5 meters — you can snorkel directly above it and see the entire structure. The Skeleton Wreck is also shallow enough for snorkeling.
But the best wrecks — Irako, Okikawa Maru, Akitsushima — are at 20-43 meters. You need an Open Water certification minimum, and Advanced Open Water for the deeper sites. Discover Scuba dives (no cert, instructor-guided) access the shallower wrecks: PHP 3,500 (~$63).
Which island-hopping tour should I do?
There are two main routes:
Tour A (Coron Island): Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon, Barracuda Lake, CYC Beach, snorkeling stops. This is the must-do tour. PHP 1,500-2,500 (~$27-45) per person.
Tour B (Outer Islands): Malcapuya Island, Banana Island, Bulog Dos sandbar. Pristine white-sand beaches with crystal water. PHP 1,500-2,500 per person.
Do Tour A first. If you have a second day, do Tour B. If you only have one day, Tour A.
Is Coron cheaper than El Nido?
Slightly, but both are pricier than mainland Philippines due to island logistics. Coron's budget dorms: PHP 500-800/night (~$9-15). El Nido's: PHP 600-1,000/night. Meals are similar. Tour prices are comparable. Diving is better value in Coron because the wreck sites are world-class and priced locally.
Is the water really that clear?
Yes. Kayangan Lake visibility: 8-10 meters. Barracuda Lake: 15+ meters. Open ocean snorkeling spots: 10-20 meters depending on conditions. The dry season (November-May) has the best visibility.
What about Coron Island being Tagbanwa territory?
Coron Island (where Kayangan and Barracuda lakes are) is the ancestral domain of the Tagbanwa people. Entry fees go to the community. Respect their land — stay on marked trails, don't litter, follow guide instructions. The relationship between tourism and indigenous rights is ongoing and complex. Your entry fee supports the community directly.
Is it safe?
Generally safe. Level 1. Standard precautions: verify life jackets on island-hopping boats (overloading happens with budget operators), use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the marine environment, and don't leave valuables on the beach during snorkeling stops.
The main risk is boat safety — check that your bangka isn't overcrowded and has life jackets actually accessible, not stowed in a compartment.
When should I go?
November to May (dry season, 25-32°C). December-February is peak — best weather, highest prices. June-October has frequent rain and rough seas but fewer tourists and lower prices. Typhoons are possible June-November, though Coron is relatively sheltered compared to the Visayas.
How many days do I need?
Minimum: 3 days (one island-hopping tour, one dive day, one flex day). Ideal: 5 days (two island-hopping tours, two dive days, one rest day with Mount Tapyas sunset). A week if you want to do an Open Water cert ($350-450 over 3-4 days).
What's the food like?
Fresh seafood, grilled everything, and Filipino staples. Highlights: grilled tuna jaw at Lolo Nonoy's (PHP 250/$4.50), sinigang soup, and fresh mango shakes (PHP 80/$1.45). Not a culinary destination — you're here for what's under the water, not on the plate.
Mount Tapyas — worth the climb?
700+ steps. 20 minutes up. You'll sweat. The 360-degree view of Coron Bay at sunset is the best free thing in town. Bring water and go at 4:30PM. Every single person who climbs it says the same thing: "Worth it."
Any hidden costs?
Environmental fees add up. Kayangan Lake: PHP 300. Barracuda Lake: PHP 300. Twin Lagoon: PHP 200. Maquinit Hot Springs: PHP 200. These aren't included in tour prices. Budget an extra PHP 1,000-1,500 (~$18-27) across your stay.
