Citizens of the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, and many others get 90-day visa-free entry to South Africa. If visiting Sani Pass (which crosses into Lesotho), you technically need a Lesotho visa — however, most tour operators handle the border crossing. Bring your passport regardless. South Africa requires at least two blank pages.
The Drakensberg is rural with no public transport to trailheads. Rent a car in Durban or Johannesburg. Roads to major areas (Royal Natal, Cathedral Peak, Giant's Castle) are tarred. Sani Pass requires a 4x4. Fuel stations are in Bergville, Winterton, and Estcourt — fill up before heading into the mountains. Driving is on the left.
Summer afternoon thunderstorms are intense — lightning is a real danger on exposed ridges. Start hikes early (before 6AM) and plan to be off high ground by 1PM. In winter, snow and ice above 2,500m can be lethal without proper gear. Always carry a rain jacket, warm layer, and emergency whistle. Register your hike at the park office and sign out on return.
Bilharzia (schistosomiasis) is present in some low-altitude rivers and dams in the Drakensberg foothills. Avoid swimming in still or slow-moving water below 1,500m. Fast-flowing mountain streams above this altitude are generally safe. If you do wade through suspect water, dry off immediately — the parasite needs 10+ minutes of skin contact.
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife runs affordable rest camps with self-catering chalets from ZAR 400-800/night (~$22-45). Cathedral Peak Hotel and Champagne Castle Hotel are mid-range at ZAR 1,500-3,000 (~$85-170). Backpackers like Inkosana Lodge near Champagne Valley offer dorms from ZAR 250 (~$14). Book Ezemvelo properties at kznwildlife.com — they fill up on school holidays.
San rock art sites are fragile and sacred. Never touch the paintings — oils from skin accelerate deterioration. Stay on marked paths. Some sites require guided visits only. Photography is allowed but flash is prohibited. The Drakensberg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — take nothing, leave nothing.
