An essential cultural experience — kava (yaqona) is Fiji's national drink, made from ground pepper root. Village visits typically include a ceremony (FJD $50-100 per person through organized tours). Clap once before accepting the bowl, drink it in one go, then clap three times. It has a mildly numbing, relaxing effect.
A hidden gem orchid garden founded by Raymond Burr (TV's Perry Mason) near Nadi, with over 2,000 orchid varieties. Entry FJD $36. Open Mon-Sat 9AM-5PM. Allow 1.5 hours. A peaceful contrast to the beaches. Best visited in the morning when orchids are most vibrant. 15-minute drive from Nadi.
Taveuni, Fiji's 'Garden Island,' features the stunning Tavoro Waterfalls (three tiers, FJD $15 entry). The Lavena Coastal Walk (5 km one way, 3 hours) ends at a waterfall you can swim behind. Taveuni is reached by domestic flight from Nadi (1 hour, from FJD $250 one-way).

Dress modestly — cover shoulders and knees. Remove hats and sunglasses when entering a village. Never touch a Fijian's head — it's considered deeply disrespectful.
The Yasawa Flyer (Awesome Adventures Fiji) and South Sea Cruises run daily catamarans from Port Denarau to the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands. Book the Bula Pass for flexibility (from FJD $459 for 5 days of unlimited travel). Domestic flights via Fiji Airways Link connect the main islands. Fiji ranges from FJD $30/night backpacker dorms to FJD $3,000+/night overwater bungalows. Mid-range beach resorts run FJD $200-500/night. Many resorts are all-inclusive — compare total cost vs room-only rates. Meal plans at remote island resorts are often mandatory since there are no restaurants nearby.
Fiji is predominantly Christian and Sunday is observed as a rest day, especially in villages and smaller islands. Many shops close, activities may be limited, and some inter-island services don't run. Plan your travel days accordingly — arrive on a weekday and save Sunday for relaxation at your resort.
The tropical sun is intense — wear reef-safe SPF 50+ sunscreen (chemical sunscreens damage Fiji's coral). Wear water shoes on reef walks to avoid coral cuts and stonefish. Drink bottled water outside major resorts. Check marine conditions before snorkeling — currents can be strong in reef passages. Avoid swimming alone.
I got the sunscreen wrong, clapped at the wrong time during kava, and booked a Sunday ferry that doesn't run. Learn from my mistakes.
