Seafood dinner at Magic Italy on Palolem(1.5 hours)
Despite the name, the Goan fish curry rice (250 INR) is excellent. Or try the grilled kingfish (350 INR) fresh from the morning catch. Feet in the sand dining

Same Indian e-Visa rules apply — US/UK/EU citizens can apply online at indianvisaonline.gov.in ($25-80 depending on duration). Goa's Dabolim airport (GOI) and new Manohar airport (GOX) both accept e-Visa arrivals. Apply at least 4 days in advance.
Scooter rental is 300-500 INR/day (~$3.60-6) and is the best way to explore Goa's beaches and villages. Activa scooters are most common. An international driving permit is technically required but rarely checked. Always wear a helmet — police fine 500 INR without one. Fuel is cheap (~100 INR/liter).
North Goa (Calangute, Baga, Anjuna) is the party zone — cheaper, louder, more crowded. South Goa (Palolem, Agonda, Benaulim) is quieter, more upscale, better beaches. Budget: North Goa 2,000-4,000 INR/day, South Goa 4,000-8,000 INR/day. Choose based on your vibe, not just budget.
Skip expensive resort restaurants. Goa's beach shacks serve fresh-catch seafood at incredible prices — grilled kingfish 300-500 INR (~$3.60-6), prawn curry rice 200-350 INR. Top shacks: Fisherman's Wharf (Cavelossim), Brittos (Baga), Zeebop by the Sea (Utorda). Peak season shacks are open November-April only.
Goa's Arabian Sea coast has strong undertows, especially during monsoon. Swim only at beaches with lifeguard towers (Calangute, Baga, Palolem during season). Red flags mean no swimming. Drownings happen every year — never swim after drinking or at deserted beaches. Currents are strongest at river-mouth beaches.
Goan cuisine is heavily Portuguese-influenced with pork, beef, and seafood prominently featured — unusual for India. Must-tries: fish curry rice (daily staple, ~150-250 INR), vindaloo (originally a Portuguese dish), xacuti, and Goan sausage (chorizo). Feni (cashew or coconut spirit) is Goa's signature drink — try it at a local bar.
Beach shack season is open, the weather is perfect, and every sunset is a masterpiece. Here's how to do peak season Goa right.
Beach shack kingfish, 310-meter waterfalls, Portuguese colonial lanes, and a seafood curry that costs $3 and tastes like $30.
I went to Goa expecting a party destination. I found Portuguese churches, the best seafood of my life, and a version of India that felt like nowhere else on earth.
