Two church sites 30 km south of Kigali preserved as memorials — the clothing and belongings of victims remain as they were. A sobering but essential experience. Free entry. Take a taxi (RWF 30,000 round trip) or join a guided half-day tour ($40-60).

On the last Saturday of every month, all Rwandans participate in community cleanup (8AM-11AM). Roads are closed, businesses shut. As a visitor, it's fascinating to observe — or better yet, join in. A unique cultural experience you won't find anywhere else.

Rwanda banned single-use plastic bags in 2008. Airport customs inspects luggage and will confiscate any plastic bags. Pack items in cloth bags or paper. This isn't a suggestion — it's enforced at the border and airport.
Ethnicity-based language (Hutu/Tutsi) is discouraged in public — Rwandans identify simply as Rwandan. April is genocide commemoration month with public mourning events. Be respectful and sensitive. Asking someone 'what are you?' (ethnically) is deeply offensive.
Mountain gorilla trekking permits in Volcanoes National Park cost $1,500/person (compared to $700 in Uganda). Only 96 permits are issued daily. Book 3-6 months ahead through the Rwanda Development Board (rdb.rw) or a licensed tour operator. This is non-negotiable and worth every penny.

Kigali is remarkably safe — walking at night is common even for solo travelers. Petty crime exists but is rare by African standards. The monthly Umuganda cleanup and strict littering fines (RWF 5,000) keep the city immaculate. Community policing is visible and effective.
