Montenegro is not in the EU or Schengen but allows visa-free entry for US, UK, Canadian, Australian, and most EU citizens for up to 90 days. Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your stay. Register with local tourism office if staying more than 24 hours (your hotel does this automatically).
Kotor's old town is tiny and gets overwhelmed when cruise ships dock (up to 4 per day in summer, 10,000+ passengers). Check the Kotor Port Authority schedule online. On heavy cruise days, explore the old town before 9AM or after 5PM when passengers return to their ships.
Direct buses from Kotor to Dubrovnik run 2-3 times daily (2-2.5 hours, €15-20). The coastal route crosses the Croatian border — bring your passport. Alternatively, share a transfer van (€20-25/person) which picks up from your accommodation.
Kotor is much cheaper than Dubrovnik (1.5 hrs south). A seafood dinner for two with wine costs €30-40. Beer is €2-3 in bars, espresso €1-1.50. Budget accommodation from €40/night. Eat at konobas (taverns) outside the main square for best prices — try Konoba Scala Santa.
The fortress climb has no guardrails and uneven stone steps that are slippery when wet. Wear proper shoes, carry 1-2 liters of water, and start early (7-8AM) in summer to avoid midday heat (35°C+). The hike is not suitable for very young children. There's no shade on most of the route.
The road circling the Bay of Kotor is one of Europe's most scenic drives. Rent a car (from €25/day) and visit Perast, Risan (Roman mosaics), and Herceg Novi. Drive counterclockwise for the best views. Roads are narrow and winding — experienced drivers only. Parking in Kotor old town costs €1-2/hr.

SeasonalThe cruise ships thin out, the fortress climb is bearable, and the bay turns golden. October Kotor is the reward for those who skip peak season.
StoriesMilena has watched Kotor transform from a quiet fishing town to a cruise ship stop. She's not entirely happy about it — but she wouldn't live anywhere else.
