All visitors — Indian and foreign — need an entry permit from the Lakshadweep Administration. Indians apply at lakshadweeptourism.com or through SPORTS (Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports). Foreign nationals can only visit Agatti, Bangaram, and Kadmat, and must book through authorized tour operators who handle permits. Apply 2-4 weeks in advance.
Flights: Air India and Alliance Air operate Kochi (COK) to Agatti (AGX) — 1.5 hours, 5,000-12,000 INR one-way. Only 1-2 flights daily, book months ahead. Ships: MV Kavaratti and MV Lakshadweep Sea from Kochi — 14-20 hours, 2,000-8,000 INR depending on class. Ships run 2-3 times per week during season. Inter-island travel is by small boats.
Capacity is extremely limited — flights have only 40-50 seats, ships fill up fast, and island accommodation is scarce. During peak season (Dec-Feb), book 3-6 months ahead for flights and 1-2 months for ship berths. Last-minute travel to Lakshadweep is nearly impossible. Have backup dates ready.
Lakshadweep is a predominantly Muslim territory and alcohol is prohibited on all inhabited islands except Bangaram (where the resort serves it). Do not attempt to bring alcohol — bags are checked at the airport and jetty. The islands are also strictly vegetarian-friendly though fish is the staple protein.
Do not stand on, touch, or break coral — it is a criminal offense under Indian environmental law. Do not collect shells, coral fragments, or sand from the beaches. Use reef-safe sunscreen only. Violators can be fined and banned from the islands. The ecosystem is extremely fragile and slow to recover.
Independent travel is difficult here. SPORTS (the government tourism body) runs package tours from 4,000-15,000 INR/person/day including accommodation, meals, and activities. Private resorts on Bangaram and Kadmat are more expensive (8,000-25,000 INR/night). There are no hostels, Airbnbs, or budget alternatives. Cash is essential — ATMs exist only on Kavaratti and Andrott.
StoriesNo WiFi, no phones, no other humans for miles — just me, reef sharks, and the clearest sky I've ever seen on Bangaram Island.
