Gastronomy
Home to Central (#1 in the world, 2023) and Maido (#5) — Lima is widely considered the culinary capital of South America

Lima's signature dish — raw fish cured in lime juice with aji peppers, red onion, and cilantro. La Mar (by Gaston Acurio, $35-50 PEN per plate, open lunch only 12-5PM) and El Mercado by Rafael Osterling ($30-45 PEN) are top picks. For budget ceviche, try the cevicherias in Surquillo Market ($12-18 PEN). Always eat ceviche at lunch — Peruvians never eat raw fish at dinner. Pair with a pisco sour.

A stunning 10 km clifftop walkway overlooking the Pacific Ocean, lined with parks, paragliding launch points, and sculptures. Free to walk. Paragliding tandem flights from the cliff: $80-120 USD (10-15 min). Larcomar mall is carved into the cliff face with ocean views. Best at sunset. Rent bikes ($10-15 PEN/hour) and ride from Miraflores to Barranco along the Malecon. Allow 2-3 hours.

A hidden gem — Lima's bohemian quarter with colorful colonial houses, street art, the iconic Bridge of Sighs (Puente de los Suspiros), and vibrant nightlife. Free to walk. Art galleries and cafes line Avenida Pedro de Osma. At night, Ayahuasca Bar (in a restored mansion, cocktails $25-35 PEN) and the penas (traditional music bars, $20-30 PEN cover) come alive. Best on foot — allow half a day exploring plus an evening.

A 1,500-year-old adobe pyramid in the middle of Miraflores — a pre-Incan Lima culture ceremonial center illuminated dramatically at night. Day tours: $15 PEN (~$4 USD). Night tours (Wed-Sun 7-10PM): $15 PEN, far more atmospheric with lighting. The on-site restaurant (Restaurante Huaca Pucllana) serves upscale Peruvian cuisine with the illuminated ruins as your backdrop — reservations essential ($80-150 PEN per person).

Ranked #1 in the world (World's 50 Best 2023), chef Virgilio Martinez's tasting menu ($750-950 PEN, ~$200-250 USD) takes you through Peru's ecosystems from the Pacific Ocean to the Andes to the Amazon — each course from a different altitude. Book 2-3 months ahead at centralrestaurante.com.pe. Lunch is slightly easier to book than dinner. A once-in-a-lifetime culinary experience.

Lima's UNESCO-listed historic center with the Plaza Mayor, Government Palace (changing of the guard daily at noon, free), and the Cathedral of Lima ($15 PEN). The Monastery of San Francisco ($15 PEN) has eerie underground catacombs containing an estimated 25,000 skeletal remains. Open daily 9AM-8:15PM. 30 minutes from Miraflores by taxi ($15-20 PEN). Best visited in the morning — the area is less safe after dark.

Airport transfer to LIM(45 minutes)
Airport Express Lima $8 USD or Uber $25-35 PEN. Allow extra time — Lima traffic is unpredictable
US, UK, EU, Canadian, and Australian citizens can enter Peru visa-free for up to 183 days. Indian citizens need a tourist visa (apply through VFS Global, $30 USD, processing 5-10 business days). Immigration may ask for proof of onward travel. Jorge Chavez airport to Miraflores: Airport Express Lima bus ($8 USD, 45 min) or Uber (~$25-35 PEN).
Lima traffic is chaotic — never drive yourself. Use Uber, inDrive, or Beat (local ride apps). A ride from Miraflores to Barranco: $8-12 PEN. To the Historic Center: $15-25 PEN. Never take unmarked taxis off the street — safety risk. The Metropolitano BRT bus ($2.50 PEN) runs a useful north-south corridor. Walking is great within Miraflores and Barranco but distances between districts are far. Lima has no metro for tourists (Line 1 doesn't serve tourist areas).
Lima's genius is that incredible food exists at all budgets. Street anticuchos (beef heart skewers): $5-8 PEN. Market ceviche: $12-18 PEN. Mid-range restaurant (Isolina, Costanera 700): $40-80 PEN. Gaston Acurio's Astrid y Gaston tasting menu: $550 PEN. The 'menu del dia' lunch set at local restaurants ($8-15 PEN for soup + main + drink) is the best deal. Pisco sours at happy hour: $12-20 PEN.
The biggest tourist mistake: booking a cheap hotel in the Historic Center or Callao. Stay in Miraflores (safest, most convenient) or Barranco (artsy, great nightlife). Both are walkable day and night. The Historic Center is fine for daytime visits but use taxi apps after dark. Callao (near the airport) should be avoided. Keep phones in pockets, carry copies of your passport, and use hotel safes for valuables.
Peru's national cocktail — pisco, lime juice, simple syrup, egg white, and Angostura bitters. Never call it a 'Chilean' pisco sour (a genuine insult). The egg white is essential — don't ask to skip it. Best pisco sour bars: Hotel Bolivar (the birthplace, 'Cathedral of Pisco'), Gran Hotel Miraflores, and Ayahuasca in Barranco. Also try chilcano (pisco + ginger ale + lime) — a lighter alternative.
Unlike Cusco (3,400m), Lima sits at sea level — no altitude sickness. But if continuing to Cusco or Machu Picchu, spend 1-2 days acclimatizing in Cusco before trekking. Book internal flights to Cusco on LATAM or Sky Airlines ($50-150 USD). Lima's garua (coastal fog) from May-November can be gloomy — don't confuse it with rain. It almost never rains in Lima.
