The Zambia side puts you closest to the falls with better swimming (Devil's Pool) and more adventure activities. The Zimbabwe side offers wider panoramic views of the full falls curtain. Adventure activities are priced in USD and add up fast: microlight $180-320, rafting $160-190, Devil's Pool $100-150, sunset cruise $65-85. Budget accommodation in Livingstone from $20-40/night (Jollyboys Backpackers is legendary, dorms $12). Local food is cheap — ZMW 30-60 ($1.20-2.50) for a meal at the market. Many activities offer combo discounts — ask operators about package deals.
The Zambezi River has large Nile crocodile and hippo populations. Never swim in the river outside designated areas. Hippos kill more people in Africa than any other large animal. On sunset cruises, boats maintain safe distances but hippos can surface unexpectedly. At the falls viewpoints, stay behind railings — the wet rocks are extremely slippery and falls have been fatal.
Livingstone is in a malaria zone — take prophylaxis and use DEET repellent, especially at dusk. The sun is fierce (near the Tropic of Capricorn) — wear high-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and drink plenty of water. At the falls, the combination of spray and sun can cause severe sunburn without you realizing. Carry a waterproof bag for electronics — the spray at the falls is relentless June-August.
Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International (LVI) has direct flights from Johannesburg (2 hours, South African Airways, Airlink), Nairobi, and domestic Zambian cities. The airport is 6km from town — taxis cost ZMW 100-150 (~$4-6). Most hotels and lodges offer free airport transfers. For budget travelers, Intercape buses run from Lusaka (7 hours, $15-20). The road is good but long.
