Indonesia's second-highest volcano (3,726m) with a stunning crater lake (Segara Anak). 2-day/1-night trek to crater rim from ~2,500,000 IDR ($160) with guide, porter, and meals. 3-day summit trek available. Permits required; book through registered operators in Senaru or Sembalun. Closed during wet season.

One of only a handful of pink-sand beaches in the world, colored by red coral fragments. Located in southeast Lombok, 2.5 hours from Mataram by car. Best visited as part of a day trip including Tanjung Ringgit cliffs. Bring snorkel gear — the offshore coral is vibrant.

Visit Sukarara and Sade villages to see traditional Sasak handloom weaving — intricate songket fabric takes weeks to produce. Free entry; weavers demonstrate their craft and sell directly. Sarongs from 150,000-500,000 IDR depending on complexity. 30 minutes south of Mataram.

Twin waterfalls near Senaru village at the foot of Rinjani. Sendang Gile is a 15-minute walk; Tiu Kelep requires a 45-minute trek through the river (bring water shoes). Entry: 10,000 IDR plus 25,000 IDR for a mandatory local guide. Spectacular in wet season when water volume peaks.

Not to be confused with Bali's Kuta — this is a laid-back surf town with world-class breaks at Gerupuk Bay (5 reef breaks accessible by boat, ~100,000 IDR round trip). Selong Belanak offers gentle beginner waves. Board rental ~100,000 IDR/day. Best swells June-September.

Hidden waterfalls in central Lombok's forest, 1.5 hours from Mataram. Benang Kelambu ('mosquito net waterfall') cascades through vines creating a curtain effect. Entry: 10,000 IDR. Less visited than Senaru falls — a genuine hidden gem. Allow 3 hours round trip including the hike.

Public transport is nearly nonexistent on Lombok. Rent a scooter for 60,000-80,000 IDR/day or a car with driver for 500,000-700,000 IDR/day. Roads in the south (to Kuta) are good; mountain roads to Senaru are winding but paved. International Driving Permit technically required.
The public harbor to the Gilis is notorious for touts, inflated prices, and 'boat is full' scams. Buy tickets only at the official ticket window (35,000-85,000 IDR depending on island). Alternatively, use Teluk Nare harbor (~150,000 IDR) for a calmer experience, or book a fast boat from Senggigi.
Lombok experienced major earthquakes in 2018 (magnitude 6.9). Tremors still occur. Know your hotel's evacuation plan, stay away from cliffs during and after quakes, and keep a small emergency bag. If on the Gilis during a quake, move to high ground immediately due to potential tsunamis.
The Rinjani crater rim trek involves 1,500m elevation gain over steep, loose terrain. Fatal accidents have occurred. Only trek with registered guides (check Rinjani Trek Management Board), bring warm layers for overnight (drops to 5°C), and descend if weather deteriorates. The summit push adds another 1,000m and is optional.
Unlike Hindu Bali, Lombok is predominantly Sasak Muslim. Cover shoulders and knees when visiting villages or towns (beaches and tourist areas are relaxed). During Ramadan, many local restaurants close during daylight — tourist areas still serve food. Alcohol is available but less prevalent than Bali.
Everything on the Gilis costs 30-100% more than mainland Lombok because it arrives by boat. Budget accommodation on Gili Air starts at 250,000 IDR/night vs. 150,000 IDR in Kuta Lombok. Stock up on sunscreen and essentials before crossing — pharmacy prices on the Gilis are steep.
