The Complete Guide to Lombok: Everything You Need Before You Go
Overview
Lombok is Bali's eastern neighbor — a 4,514 km² island in Indonesia's West Nusa Tenggara province. It's home to Indonesia's second-highest volcano (Mount Rinjani, 3,726m), the famous Gili Islands, some of the country's best surf breaks, and a Sasak Muslim culture that's distinctly different from Hindu Bali.
The island has about 3.4 million residents but sees a fraction of Bali's tourist traffic. Infrastructure is developing but remains basic in many areas. That's part of the appeal.
Best Time to Visit
May to September (dry season) is ideal for:
Rinjani trekking (the mountain closes during wet season)
Diving and snorkeling (best visibility)
Surfing (biggest swells at Gerupuk Bay)
October to April (wet season) brings afternoon downpours and rougher seas, but also:
Fewer tourists and lower prices
Lush, green landscapes
Waterfall season (Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile at peak volume)
Avoid: January-February if you're planning water activities. Seas can be rough and ferry cancellations are common.
Getting There
By air:Lombok International Airport (LOP) has direct flights from Bali (25 minutes, from 400,000 IDR), Jakarta (2 hours, from 800,000 IDR), and KL (3 hours, AirAsia from 500,000 IDR). International arrivals get Visa on Arrival (500,000 IDR, 30 days).
By boat from Bali: Fast boats from Padang Bai or Serangan to Gili Islands or Bangsal, Lombok. 90 minutes to 2.5 hours depending on operator. 350,000-500,000 IDR. Operators: Bluewater Express, Eka Jaya, Gili Getaway. Book at gilitickets.com. The public slow ferry from Padang Bai to Lembar takes 4-5 hours (45,000 IDR) — much cheaper but much slower.
Where to Stay
Mataram — Island capital. Functional but not scenic. Good for a first-night base near the airport. Rooms from 150,000 IDR.
Kuta Lombok — Surf town on the south coast. Laid-back, growing slowly. The best base for beaches and surfing. Budget rooms from 150,000-250,000 IDR, mid-range from 400,000-800,000 IDR.
Senggigi — West coast resort strip. More developed than Kuta, with hotels, restaurants, and a strip of beach bars. Tourist-oriented but not overdone. Rooms from 200,000-500,000 IDR.
Senaru — Mountain village at the base of Rinjani. Simple guesthouses from 100,000-200,000 IDR. The starting point for most Rinjani treks.
Gili Islands — Three car-free islands:
Gili Trawangan (Gili T): Party island. Bars, dive shops, restaurants. Budget rooms from 250,000 IDR.
Gili Air: Relaxed, family-friendly. Best balance of facilities and peace. Budget rooms from 250,000 IDR.
Nasi balap puyung — Rice with shredded chicken, egg, peanuts, and sambal. A one-plate meal for 12,000-18,000 IDR.
On the Gilis, food is 30-100% more expensive than mainland Lombok because everything arrives by boat.

Safety
Earthquakes: Lombok experienced magnitude 6.9 quakes in 2018. Tremors still occur. Know your evacuation plan. On the Gilis during a quake, move to high ground immediately.
Rinjani: Fatal accidents happen. Only trek with registered guides. Carry warm layers (drops to 5°C at altitude). Descend if weather deteriorates.
Scooter safety: Wear a helmet always. Police checkpoints exist. Roads in mountainous areas are winding and can be slippery.
Bangsal Harbor scams: Buy ferry tickets only at the official window (35,000-85,000 IDR to Gilis). Ignore touts. Or use Teluk Nare harbor nearby for a calmer alternative (~150,000 IDR).

Essential Tips
Lombok is conservative Muslim. Cover shoulders and knees when visiting villages or towns. Beaches and tourist areas are relaxed. During Ramadan, many local restaurants close during daylight.
Bring cash from Mataram or Senggigi. ATMs on the Gilis frequently run out. ATMs outside tourist areas are scarce.
Scooter rental is essential. Public transport effectively doesn't exist. International Driving Permit technically required.
Gili Islands are pricier than mainland. Everything costs 30-100% more because it arrives by boat. Stock up on essentials before crossing.
Pack reef-safe sunscreen. Coral around the Gilis is recovering and chemical sunscreen damages it. If you're exploring the region, Krabi offers a compelling comparison. For a different perspective, consider Okinawa as well.
Lombok isn't trying to be Bali and that's the entire point. It's rougher around the edges, harder to navigate, and immeasurably more rewarding for travelers who don't need everything smoothed and packaged. Travelers who enjoy this often also love Bali. If you're exploring the region, Raja Ampat offers a compelling comparison.
