Morning Alms Giving Ceremony
Each dawn at 5:30-6:30AM, hundreds of monks walk barefoot through the old town collecting sticky rice offerings from kneeling locals. Watch respectfully from a distance — do not use flash, block their path, or touch monks. If you want to participate, buy sticky rice from the market (not from street vendors who sell stale rice). This is a sacred 600-year-old tradition, not a photo op.

Kuang Si Falls
Stunning three-tiered turquoise waterfall 30km south of town, with natural swimming pools and a rescue bear sanctuary at the entrance. Entry: 20,000 LAK (~$1). Open 8AM-5PM. Tuk-tuk round trip: 60,000-80,000 LAK per person. Swim in the lower pools (bring swimwear). The 15-minute hike to the top gives views of the main cascade. Visit early morning to avoid tour groups. Allow 3-4 hours.

Mekong River Sunset Cruise
Slow boat cruises on the Mekong offer views of limestone karst mountains and riverside villages. 1.5-hour sunset cruises from 150,000-250,000 LAK (~$7-12) per person, departing from the boat landing near the Royal Palace. Some include a Lao whisky tasting. For adventure, take the 2-day slow boat upstream to Huay Xai (Thailand border).

Royal Palace Museum (Haw Kham)
Former residence of the Lao royal family, now a museum housing the Phra Bang (the city's most sacred Buddha image), royal regalia, diplomatic gifts, and murals. Entry: 30,000 LAK (~$1.50). Open 8AM-11:30AM and 1:30PM-4PM, closed Tuesday. No photos inside. Shoes and bags must be removed. Allow 1-1.5 hours. The throne hall and royal bedroom are highlights.

Night Market on Sisavangvong Road
Every evening from 5PM, the main street transforms into a vibrant market selling handwoven textiles, mulberry paper products, and Hmong handicrafts. Prices start low — a silk scarf runs 50,000-150,000 LAK. The food stalls on the side street (Khem Khong Road) are excellent: try the buffet plates (15,000 LAK for all-you-can-fit) and fresh fruit shakes (10,000 LAK).

Mount Phousi
A 100-meter hill in the center of town with 328 steps to the golden stupa of That Chomsi at the summit. Entry: 20,000 LAK (~$1). Open 5:30AM-6PM. The 360-degree panorama of the town, Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, and surrounding mountains is the best viewpoint in Luang Prabang. Climb for sunrise or sunset — sunset is more popular. Allow 45 minutes.

Travel Tips
Visa & Entry
Visa on Arrival Available
Most nationalities can get a 30-day visa on arrival at LPQ airport for $30-42 USD (varies by nationality). Bring a passport photo and USD cash. Processing takes 15-30 minutes. E-visa is also available through laoevisa.gov.la ($50, 3 business days). ASEAN passport holders get 30 days visa-free.
Local Customs
Respect the Alms Ceremony
The morning alms giving is a sacred Buddhist practice, not a tourist attraction. Do not stand in the monks' path, use flash photography, or touch monks (especially women). Keep at least 3 meters distance. If participating, kneel and offer rice quietly. Tour operators who load tourists into the ceremony route with cheap rice are exploitative — avoid them.
Dress Conservatively in Temples
Luang Prabang has over 30 active temples. Cover shoulders and knees when visiting. Remove shoes before entering any temple building. Do not sit with your feet pointing toward Buddha images. Monks should not be touched by women. Small donations (5,000-10,000 LAK) at each temple are appreciated.
transport
Everything Is Walkable
The old town peninsula is only 1.5km long — you can walk everywhere. For Kuang Si Falls and nearby villages, hire a tuk-tuk (negotiate before boarding) or rent a bicycle (30,000-50,000 LAK/day) from shops on the main road. There are no ride-hailing apps. Shared minivans to Vang Vieng (4 hours) cost around 120,000 LAK.
Budget
Bring USD Cash and Exchange Locally
ATMs charge 20,000 LAK (~$1) per withdrawal with a 2,000,000 LAK maximum. Exchange booths on the main street give better rates than the airport. Many tourist businesses accept Thai Baht or USD, but you'll get a worse rate. Budget $30-50/day for comfortable mid-range travel including guesthouse, food, and activities.
Safety
Beware of River Currents
The Mekong has strong undercurrents even when the surface looks calm. Never swim in the Mekong. At Kuang Si Falls, only swim in the designated pools — the main waterfall base has a dangerous pull. During rainy season (June-October), water levels rise dramatically and some activities may be suspended.
