July-August brings very heavy rainfall and regular landslides that can block the road from Dharamshala. Avoid driving at night during monsoon. The Triund trek path becomes dangerously slippery — forest department may close it. Always check road conditions before traveling during monsoon season.
Daytime temperatures can be 25°C while nights drop to 5-8°C, even in summer. Carry layers. If trekking Triund, temperatures at the summit can drop below freezing at night. Waterproof jacket is essential year-round — rain can appear suddenly. Sturdy walking shoes needed for the steep town streets.
Public teachings happen several times a year (check dalailama.com schedule). Registration is free but mandatory — bring your passport to the security office near Tsuglagkhang a day before.
