One of Europe's best value capitals. A good sit-down lunch costs 8-15 EUR, a pint of local beer 3-5 EUR, a museum entry 5-10 EUR. Central Market food is even cheaper — a full meal under 5 EUR. Hotels in Old Town start at 50-80 EUR/night. Riga is roughly 40-50% cheaper than Western European capitals.
Riga is generally safe, but Old Town bars (especially on Jēkaba and Audēju streets) can have aggressive touts and inflated drink prices. Always check the menu before ordering. Avoid unlicensed taxis — use Bolt app instead. Pickpocketing occurs at the Central Market during busy hours.
Many tourists stick to Old Town and miss the Art Nouveau district entirely — it's a 15-minute walk north. Alberta, Elizabetes, and Strēlnieku streets have the best facades. Download the free 'Riga Art Nouveau' walking tour app. The district is best photographed in afternoon light.
Latvian cuisine includes grey peas with bacon, smoked fish, hemp butter, and dark rye bread. The best place to try authentic food is Riga Central Market, not Old Town tourist restaurants. Also try kvass (fermented rye drink) from street vendors — 1-2 EUR for a fresh glass.
