Toy train to Kalka (5-6 hours) then Shatabdi to Delhi (4 hours). Or drive to Chandigarh (4 hours) for a flight
Apply at indianvisaonline.gov.in. 30-day e-Tourist visa ~$25. Most international visitors fly into Delhi (DEL) and travel to Shimla by train or road. No direct international flights to Shimla.
From Delhi: Kalka Shatabdi Express to Kalka (4 hours, INR 700-1,000) then toy train to Shimla (5-6 hours). Or drive via Chandigarh (7-8 hours, scenic NH5). Flights from Delhi to Shimla (SLV) are limited and frequently cancelled due to weather. The toy train journey is half the experience.
The core area (Mall Road, Ridge, Lakkar Bazaar) is pedestrian-only — no vehicles allowed. Wear comfortable walking shoes for steep hills. Local taxis for outskirts (Kufri, Mashobra): INR 1,000-2,000 per day. City buses are cheap (INR 10-30) but infrequent. An elevator connects Cart Road to Mall Road.
Shimla's monkeys (rhesus macaques) are bold and aggressive, especially near Jakhoo Temple and The Ridge. Don't carry food in visible bags or plastic. Don't make eye contact or bare teeth (they see it as aggression). Keep sunglasses on your head secure — they grab shiny objects. Carry a stick on the Jakhoo hike.
Budget hotels on Cart Road: INR 800-1,500/night. Mall Road hotels: INR 2,000-5,000. Eat at Baljees (since 1930, mains INR 150-300) or Sita Ram & Sons for dham (local thali, INR 150). Avoid peak season (May-June, Dec-Jan) when prices double and roads jam. March-April and September-October offer the best value.
Snowfall typically happens December-February, heaviest in January. Roads to Kufri and beyond may close. Carry warm layers, waterproof boots, and hand warmers. The toy train sometimes halts in heavy snow. Hotel room heaters are often inadequate — request extra blankets. Hot water may be limited at budget stays.
Travel GuidesColonial charm vs. adventure adrenaline. Toy trains vs. Rohtang Pass. Mall Road strolls vs. river rafting. Two Himachal icons, one very different trip.
StoriesThe Kalka-Shimla railway takes 5 hours to cover 96 kilometers. Every minute of it is worth more than the destination itself.
