Shimla vs. Manali: Which Himachal Hill Station Is Right for You?
This is probably the most common question I get about Himachal Pradesh: Shimla or Manali? And the honest answer is they're so different that comparing them is like comparing a library to a gym. Both are great. They serve completely different purposes.
But since you asked, let's break it down.
The Vibe
Shimla is colonial elegance at 2,200 meters. The former British summer capital has a pedestrian Mall Road, Gothic churches, the Viceregal Lodge where India's partition was decided, and an atmosphere of studied leisure. People come to Shimla to walk, eat, and breathe mountain air. The pace is deliberately slow.
Manali is adventure at 2,050 meters. The Himalayan town at the head of the Kullu Valley draws paragliders, rafters, snowboarders, trekkers, and the entire spectrum of people who want to DO things in mountains rather than look at them. Old Manali's hippie cafe scene adds a bohemian layer.
Winner: Depends on your personality. Type A → Manali. Type B → Shimla.

Manali: More diverse because of the backpacker influence. Old Manali cafes serve everything from Israeli shakshuka to Italian pasta. Lazy Dog, Drifters, Bob Dylan's Cafe. Local dhabas for Himachali food at INR 100-200. The international options are surprisingly decent for a mountain town.

Can You Do Both?
Yes. Shimla to Manali is 8-10 hours by road via Mandi. The drive is scenic — through Kullu Valley orchards and along the Beas River. Most Himachal itineraries do a combined circuit:
Delhi → Shimla (toy train) → 3 nights → drive to Manali → 3 nights → overnight bus to Delhi.
This is the classic 7-8 day Himachal trip, and it's a good one. You get the colonial charm, the adventure rush, and two completely different mountain experiences.
Just don't try to do both in 3 days. That's rushing, and mountains don't reward rushing.
