Citizens of the US, Canada, UK, EU countries, and many others can enter Mongolia visa-free for 30 days. Just show up with a valid passport (6+ months validity). For longer stays, a 30-day extension is possible at the Immigration Agency in Ulaanbaatar (36,000 MNT). No invitation letter or pre-registration needed for visa-free nationalities.
The new Chinggis Khaan airport (UBN) is 52km southwest of the city center (the old airport was much closer). Airport bus to the city takes 1-1.5 hours (15,000 MNT). Taxi costs 80,000-100,000 MNT (~$24-30). Pre-arrange airport pickup through your hotel or tour operator — it is more reliable. The road can be jammed during rush hour.
Mongolia outside UB has virtually no paved roads, no street signs, and limited phone coverage. Do not attempt to drive yourself. Book a tour operator or private guide with a Russian UAZ van or Toyota Land Cruiser. Expect to average 30-50 km/h on dirt tracks. Bring a portable battery pack, offline maps (maps.me), and more water than you think you need. Flat tires are routine.
Ulaanbaatar is affordable: a full local meal costs 8,000-15,000 MNT (~$2.50-5). Budget guesthouses: 30,000-50,000 MNT/night. Mid-range hotels: 80,000-150,000 MNT. A ger camp in the countryside with three meals costs $30-60/night. The biggest expense is organized tours to the Gobi or countryside ($80-150/day). ATMs in UB dispense MNT; outside the city, cash is essential.
If invited into a nomadic family's ger: always enter and move clockwise (left), never step on the threshold, accept offered airag (fermented mare's milk) or milk tea with your right hand. Do not refuse food — at least take a sip. The back of the ger (facing the door) is the honored guest area. Never point your feet at the hearth or lean against the support poles. Bring small gifts (candy, fruit, or cigarettes for the elders).
The area around the Black Market (Narantuul Market), public buses, and the central post office are pickpocket hotspots. Use a money belt or front pocket for valuables. Avoid walking alone in UB after midnight, especially near bars. Outside the city, Mongolia is extremely safe — nomadic culture values hospitality to strangers. The biggest countryside danger is getting stuck on bad roads.
SeasonalChildren race horses for 30km, wrestlers with no weight classes grapple until one falls, and an entire nation shuts down for three days of celebration.
