Apply at indianvisaonline.gov.in. 30-day e-Tourist visa ~$25. Most international visitors fly into Delhi (DEL) and travel to Manali by bus (12-14 hours overnight) or fly to Bhuntar (KUU, limited and unreliable schedules).
From Delhi: Volvo AC buses from ISBT Kashmere Gate (INR 1,200-1,800, 12-14 hours overnight, book on redbus.in or HRTC). Private Volvo operators like Himachal Volvo, Laxmi Holidays are reliable. From Chandigarh: 8-9 hours by road. Bhuntar flights (KUU) from Delhi are cheap but frequently cancelled in monsoon/winter.
Auto-rickshaws don't exist here. Local buses run between Manali, Old Manali, Vashisht, and Solang (INR 10-30). Private taxis for sightseeing: INR 2,000-3,500/day (negotiate at the taxi union stand). Mountain roads are narrow, winding, and often damaged. Road accidents are Manali's biggest safety risk. Never hire unlicensed drivers. Avoid road travel during heavy rain (Jul-Aug) due to landslides. The Manali-Leh highway is open Jun-Sep only. Carry motion sickness medication for the winding roads.
Manali at 2,050m is fine for most people, but Rohtang Pass (3,978m) can cause mild altitude sickness — headache, nausea. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol the night before, ascend slowly. Winter temperatures drop to -15°C at passes. Carry thermal layers, gloves, windproof jackets even in summer for high-altitude excursions.
Budget: Old Manali guesthouses INR 500-1,000/night, meals at local dhabas INR 100-200. Mid-range: Mall Road hotels INR 2,000-4,000, restaurant meals INR 300-600. Splurge: Boutique stays like The Himalayan INR 8,000-15,000. Off-season (Jul-Aug monsoon, Nov-Feb non-snow days) prices drop 40-60%.
Rohtang Pass requires an online permit (rohtangpermits.nic.in, INR 550/person). Only 1,200 vehicles allowed daily — apply 1-2 days before. Permits are date-specific and non-transferable. Carry printed permit and ID. Petrol/diesel vehicles only (no LPG). The pass closes October-May due to snow.
