Old Town is car-free and walkable. Libertas city buses connect suburbs. Water taxis to beaches and islands.
A 2 km walk atop the medieval walls encircling Old Town with stunning Adriatic views. Entry: ~€35 (includes Lovrijenac Fortress). Open 8AM-7:30PM (summer). Allow 1.5-2 hours. Start at the Ploce Gate entrance early morning to beat cruise ship crowds. Bring water — no shade.
The main limestone-paved street running through Old Town, lined with baroque buildings, cafes, and shops. Free to walk. The marble surface is polished to a shine by centuries of foot traffic. Best experienced in the early morning or late evening when day-trippers leave.
A 4-minute cable car ride to 412m above sea level for panoramic views of Old Town, Lokrum Island, and the Adriatic. Entry: ~€27 return. Open 9AM-midnight (summer). The restaurant at the top is overpriced — bring your own snacks. Sunset from here is spectacular.
A car-free nature island 15 min by ferry from Old Town harbor. Ferry: ~€15 return (runs every 30 min in summer). Has a botanical garden, a Dead Sea saltwater lake for swimming, a ruined Benedictine monastery, and Game of Thrones Iron Throne photo-op. Allow half a day.
Hidden gem: a bar literally built into the cliffs outside the city walls with no sign — just a hole in the wall marked 'Cold Drinks.' Drinks from €6. No seats — sit on rocks above the Adriatic. Jump into the sea for a swim. Open seasonally. Two locations: Buza I and Buza II (II is better).
Dubrovnik served as King's Landing in Game of Thrones. Guided tours (~€25-35, 2 hours) cover filming locations: Jesuit Stairs (Walk of Shame), Lovrijenac Fortress (Red Keep), and Pile Gate. Tours run daily. Even non-fans enjoy the history and architecture context.
Hidden gem: three car-free islands (Kolocep, Lopud, Sipan) reachable by ferry from Dubrovnik. Day-trip boats cost ~€40-60 with lunch. Lopud has the stunning Sunj Beach — one of the only sandy beaches in the area. Far fewer tourists than Dubrovnik. Ferries run daily in summer.
Arrive at Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) and transfer to Old Town (20 km). Atlas shuttle bus (€9) or taxi (€35-40). Check in and take your first walk through the marble streets.

Restaurants inside Old Town charge 30-50% more than those just outside. Walk 5 minutes to Lapad or Gruz for the same quality at local prices. In Old Town, Konoba Dalmatino on Miha Pracata street is one of the few places with fair prices. A seafood dinner outside walls costs €15-25 vs €30-50 inside.

The polished limestone streets of Old Town become extremely slippery when wet or even dewy in the morning. Wear shoes with good grip, not smooth-soled sandals or flip-flops. This catches many tourists off guard — ankle injuries are common.

Before it was King's Landing, Dubrovnik was a rival to Venice, a republic that lasted 450 years, and a city that rebuilt itself from rubble. Twice.
Up to 10,000 cruise passengers flood Old Town daily in summer. Here's how to dodge them, eat well, and swim in places they'll never find.
I climbed 2 km of medieval walls in 35-degree heat, jumped into the Adriatic from a cliff bar with no sign, and ate octopus that changed my standards permanently.
