Over 100 open-air food stalls set up nightly along the Naka River in Nakasu and Tenjin areas. Each seats 8-10 people around a counter. Ramen from 600 JPY, yakitori from 150 JPY per skewer. Open roughly 6PM-2AM. Arrive before 8PM to avoid long waits. Tenjin-area stalls are less touristy than Nakasu.
Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of learning, 30 minutes from Hakata by Nishitetsu train (410 JPY). Grounds are free; treasure house 500 JPY. Famous for 6,000 plum trees blooming in February-March. Subway to Fukuoka Airport(15 minutes)
Just 2 stops and 260 JPY from Hakata Station. Allow 2 hours for international flights, 1 hour for domestic. The airport has good last-minute shopping for mentaiko and sweets
Most Western passport holders receive 90-day visa-free entry. Complete Visit Japan Web registration before arrival for faster immigration. Fukuoka Airport has direct flights from Seoul, Shanghai, Taipei, Bangkok, and other Asian cities.
FUK airport is only 2 subway stops (5 minutes, 260 JPY) from Hakata Station — the most city-center airport in Japan. Hakata Station is also a Shinkansen terminus for bullet trains to Hiroshima (1 hr), Osaka (2.5 hrs), and Tokyo (5 hrs).
The Fukuoka Tourist City Pass (1,580 JPY for full area) covers subway, buses, and Nishitetsu trains including to Dazaifu. Single subway rides are 210-340 JPY. IC cards (Suica/ICOCA/nimoca) work on all transit.
