An archipelago of 42 islands with emerald lagoons, white sand beaches, and dramatic limestone cliffs — the inspiration for The Beach. Full-day boat tours from Samui cost 1,500-2,500 THB (~$42-70) including kayaking, snorkeling, and lunch. The hike to the Emerald Lake viewpoint on Koh Mae Ko (steep, 500 steps) is the highlight. Open February-December (closed January for monsoon). Book through reputable operators — avoid the cheapest tours.

A 12-meter golden Buddha statue sitting on a small island connected to Koh Samui by a causeway. Free entry (donations welcome). Open daylight hours. The staircase is flanked by dragon serpents. Dress modestly — sarongs available to borrow. Best viewed at sunset when the gold catches the light. Allow 30-45 minutes. Located near the airport at the northeast tip of the island.

Samui's longest and most popular beach — 7km of white sand with excellent swimming. The north end is calmer; the south end has the nightlife strip. Sunbeds rent for 100-200 THB/day. The Chaweng Walking Street night market has pad thai (60 THB), smoothies (40 THB), and live music. Water sports include jet skiing (1,500 THB/30 min) and parasailing (1,200 THB). Best combined with a sunset cocktail at Ark Bar.

Two waterfalls in the island's interior: Na Muang 1 (easily accessible, 18m cascade into a swimming pool, free) and Na Muang 2 (a 30-minute jungle hike, 80m tall, more dramatic but slippery rocks). Located in the south of the island, 12km from Nathon. Best visited during or just after rainy season when the flow is strongest. Bring water shoes. Allow 2-3 hours for both falls.

A charming old Chinese-Thai trading village on the north coast with wooden shophouses converted to boutiques, galleries, and restaurants. The Friday Night Walking Street Market (5-11PM) is the island's best — local crafts, street food, and live music along the waterfront. Less touristy than Chaweng. Try the seafood restaurants along the pier for fresh catches at 200-400 THB per dish.

Koh Samui has several authentic Muay Thai training camps offering drop-in classes for beginners. Camps like Lamai Muay Thai and Superpro Samui charge 500-800 THB per session (1.5-2 hours). Watch live fights at Chaweng Stadium (entry 1,500-2,000 THB) on fight nights — typically Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Fights start at 9PM and feature real competitive bouts.

Return to your favorite beach, try a new one, or nap
Muay Thai fights at Chaweng Stadium(2.5 hours)
Live competitive fights. Entry 1,500-2,000 THB. Fights start 9PM on fight nights (typically Tue, Thu, Sat). Real bouts, not tourist shows. The atmosphere is electric
Unstructured day — relax on a quiet beach, take a day trip to Koh Phangan, or explore the island interior.
Option A: Koh Phangan day trip(6 hours)
Speedboat 600 THB one-way (30 min). Visit Bottle Beach, Than Sadet waterfall, or Haad Salad. Return by 5PM ferry. If timing aligns with a full moon party, stay the night
Option B: Secret Beach hopping(4 hours)
Rent a scooter (200-300 THB/day, wear helmet) and find Samui's quieter beaches — Silver Beach (Haad Thongson) between Chaweng and Lamai is a hidden gem with clear water and few people. Coral Cove is another beauty
Sunset dinner at The Cliff Bar & Grill(2 hours)
Cliffside restaurant between Chaweng and Lamai with panoramic sunset views. Mains 300-600 THB. The seafood platter for two (1,200 THB) is excellent. Book ahead for a terrace table
Final swim and island breakfast before the short ride to the airport.
Morning beach swim(1 hour)
One last dip. The water is warmest in the morning
Breakfast at hotel or Bophut cafe(1 hour)
Try a Thai breakfast — jok (rice porridge) with ginger and egg, 50 THB at a local shop. Or Western brunch at Coco Tam's in Bophut
Last-minute duty-free shopping in Nathon(1 hour)
If you missed the duty-free prices — alcohol, chocolate, and cosmetics are significantly cheaper than mainland
Transfer to Samui Airport(20 minutes)
USM is tiny — arrive 1.5 hours before departure. The open-air terminal with garden walkways is one of the prettiest airports in Southeast Asia
Most Western nationalities get 30-60 day visa-free entry to Thailand. Indian passport holders can get a 15-day visa on arrival (2,000 THB) or apply for a 60-day tourist visa at the Thai embassy. The entry stamp applies to all of Thailand — no separate island visa needed.
Samui airport is privately owned by Bangkok Airways, making flights 2-3x more expensive than to Surat Thani. Budget alternative: fly to Surat Thani (URT) and take a bus+ferry combo (250-400 THB, 4-5 hours total). On the island, rent a scooter (200-300 THB/day) or use songthaews (shared trucks, 30-100 THB depending on distance). Grab does not operate on Samui.
Scooter crashes are the leading cause of tourist injury and death on Samui. Hilly, winding roads with sand patches and stray dogs are dangerous even for experienced riders. Always wear a helmet (police checkpoints fine 500 THB). International driving permit technically required. If renting, inspect brakes and take photos of existing damage. Travel insurance must explicitly cover motorbike riding.
Box jellyfish appear in Gulf of Thailand waters, particularly October-April. Fatal stings are rare but occur. Look for warning flags on beaches. Swim near lifeguard stations if present. Pour vinegar (not fresh water) on jellyfish stings — many beaches have vinegar stations. Major resorts have nets during peak season.
Tourist-facing restaurants on Chaweng charge 200-500 THB per dish. Step one street back and you'll find Thai restaurants serving pad thai for 50-80 THB and curry rice for 60-100 THB. The best cheap eats are at Lamai night market and the food stalls behind Makro supermarket. 7-Eleven toasties (35 THB) are a reliable backpacker staple.
The famous Full Moon Party is on neighboring Koh Phangan, a 30-minute speedboat ride (600 THB one-way) or 1.5-hour ferry from Samui. Parties run midnight to dawn around the full moon each month. Pre-book your return transport — boats fill up. Watch your drinks (spiking occurs), wear shoes on the beach (broken glass), and carry only cash you can afford to lose.
StoriesShe's watched Samui transform from coconut island to resort destination over 17 years. Here's what a long-term resident thinks you're getting wrong about the island.
Travel GuidesThailand's coconut island isn't just a beach destination — it's a base for marine parks, Muay Thai camps, and some of the best Thai cooking classes in the country.
SeasonalEmpty beaches, storm-light photography, resort rates slashed in half, and seafood that's somehow cheaper when the fishing boats still run. The contrarian case for rainy-season Samui.
