Most nationalities can apply for a 90-day e-visa online ($25) at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn — processing takes 3 business days. US, UK, EU, and many Asian passport holders get 45-day visa-free entry. Double-check your nationality as rules changed in August 2023. Have a printed copy of your e-visa as backup.
Cam Ranh Airport (CXR) is 35km south — fixed-price airport taxis charge 400,000-500,000 VND (~$16-20). Grab is cheaper at 200,000-300,000 VND (~$8-12) but you must walk outside arrivals to the pickup zone. Airport shuttle buses run to the city for 60,000 VND (~$2.40) but stop at designated points only.
Scooter rental is 120,000-150,000 VND/day (~$5-6) but Vietnamese traffic is chaotic and your travel insurance likely won't cover motorbike accidents unless you hold a Vietnamese motorcycle license. Consider renting a bicycle (50,000 VND/day) for the beachfront or using Grab for longer trips.
Box jellyfish appear in Nha Trang waters during October-December monsoon season. Lifeguards post red flags — heed them. Vinegar (not fresh water) is the first aid for stings. The rest of the year is generally safe, but ask locals about conditions before swimming at less-monitored beaches.
Touts on the beach offering 'free' boat trips or heavily discounted tours often lead to high-pressure timeshare or gem shop visits. Book day tours through your hotel or reputable agencies on Tran Phu street. If a price seems too good to be true, it comes with strings attached.
Nha Trang's signature dishes cost almost nothing at street stalls: banh canh cha ca (fish cake noodle soup, 30,000 VND / ~$1.20), nem nuong (grilled pork sausage wraps, 40,000 VND), and bun cha ca (fish cake rice noodles). Best stalls cluster around Cho Dam market and along Nguyen Thi Minh Khai street.
At Dam Market and souvenir shops, the first price quoted to tourists is often 3-5x the local price. Counter at 30-40% and negotiate from there. Haggling at restaurants or with metered taxis is considered rude. For Grab rides, the price is fixed in-app.
SeasonalCrystal-clear snorkeling at Hon Mun, 6 km of uncrowded beach before the Russian tour groups arrive, and banh canh cua for $1.50. Nha Trang's best months.
Travel GuidesOne has the better bay and island-hopping. The other has the better beach, better food access, and Hoi An next door. An honest comparison.
StoriesDay 1: mineral mud up to my neck. Day 4: snorkeling over pristine coral at Hon Mun. Day 6: standing in a Hindu temple older than most European cathedrals.
