| Feature | Nha Trang | Da Nang |
|---|---|---|
| Beach length | 6 km crescent bay | 30+ km of continuous sand |
| Sand type | Golden | White |
| Swimming | Calm in dry season | Good year-round (My Khe) |
| Crowd level | Moderate-high | Lower on long stretches |
| Best section | Southern end near Tran Phu bridge | My Khe Beach (city center) |
Da Nang's My Khe Beach is genuinely one of Asia's best — wide, clean, and stretching for kilometers. Nha Trang's beach is more compact but the bay setting, with islands visible offshore, is more scenic.
Winner: Da Nang for the beach itself. Nha Trang for the bay setting.
Nha Trang wins decisively. Hon Mun Marine Protected Area has Vietnam's best coral reefs with 350+ coral species. Island-hopping boat tours are a core Nha Trang experience. Da Nang has the Cham Islands for snorkeling, but they're 90 minutes offshore by boat and the reef quality doesn't compare.
Nha Trang has the Po Nagar Cham Towers (7th-12th century Hindu temples, 22,000 VND) and Long Son Pagoda with its 24m white Buddha. Both are in the city.
Da Nang has the Marble Mountains (40,000 VND) and, critically, Hoi An — the UNESCO-listed ancient town — just 30 minutes south. Hoi An is one of Vietnam's essential experiences. This proximity gives Da Nang a massive advantage for cultural exploration.
Winner: Da Nang (because of Hoi An access).
Both cities have excellent food, but the flavors differ. Nha Trang specializes in seafood noodle soups (banh canh, bun cha ca) and nem nuong grilled spring rolls. Da Nang has mi quang (turmeric noodles) and banh xeo (crispy pancakes).
Both are cheap: 25,000-50,000 VND (~$1-2) for street food meals.
Winner: Tie. Different specialties, both excellent.
Nha Trang has more resort-oriented nightlife — beach bars, the Sailing Club, and the four-island party boat tour. It's also the mud bath capital of Vietnam (Thap Ba Hot Spring, 250,000-400,000 VND).
Da Nang has the Dragon Bridge (fire-breathing dragon on weekends), Ba Na Hills with the Golden Bridge, and a more local nightlife scene.
Winner: Nha Trang for resort/beach nightlife. Da Nang for unique attractions.
| Expense | Nha Trang | Da Nang |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel (mid-range) | 400,000-800,000 VND | 500,000-1,000,000 VND |
| Street food meal | 25,000-50,000 VND | 25,000-50,000 VND |
| Boat tour | 250,000-900,000 VND | 400,000-1,200,000 VND (Cham Islands) |
Nha Trang is slightly cheaper overall, particularly for accommodation.
Choose Nha Trang if: snorkeling/diving is a priority, you want island-hopping, you prefer a bay setting, budget matters.
Choose Da Nang if: you want the best beach quality, Hoi An access is important, you prefer unique attractions (Golden Bridge, Dragon Bridge), you want a more modern city.
Choose both if: you have 10+ days in central-south Vietnam. They're 10 hours apart by train or 1 hour by flight.
