The Complete Istanbul Guide: Both Sides of the Bosphorus, One Unforgettable City
Istanbul spans two continents, serves 16 million residents, and contains more history per square kilometer than almost any city on earth. It's also one of the most affordable major destinations for foreign visitors right now, thanks to the weak Turkish Lira.
This guide covers the practical framework: how to get around, what to see, where to eat, and how to avoid the tourist traps that line every route between Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazaar.
Best Time to Visit
April to May and September to November. The spring and autumn shoulder seasons give you 15-25°C temperatures, manageable crowds, and clear skies. Summer (June-August) brings 28-35°C heat and packed tourist sites. Winter is cold (3-9°C with occasional snow) but atmospheric and cheap.
Ramadan dates shift annually — check the calendar. Istanbul during Ramadan is a different experience: restaurants close during daylight, but the sunset iftar meals at historic mosques are extraordinary.
Getting There
Two airports:
Istanbul Airport (IST): The main international hub on the European side. 40 km from Sultanahmet. Havaist bus (TRY 120) runs to Sultanahmet, Taksim, and other zones every 30 minutes.
Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW): On the Asian side. Used by budget carriers and some European routes. 50 km from Sultanahmet. Havabis bus to Taksim (TRY 100).
Avoid taxis from either airport unless you're using BiTaksi (the app) or insisting on the meter. Airport taxi scams are Istanbul's most reliable tourist trap.
Getting Around
The Istanbulkart
Buy this immediately. It works on metro, tram, bus, ferry, and funicular. Available at any metro station (TRY 70 card fee, then top up). Single ride TRY 15, with transfers within 2 hours discounted to TRY 8-10. Far cheaper than buying individual tokens.
Key Transit Lines
T1 Tram: Connects Sultanahmet, Grand Bazaar (Beyazit stop), Eminonu (ferries), Karakoy, and Kabatas. Your most-used line.
Ferries: Eminonu to Kadikoy (TRY 15, 20 mins), Eminonu to Uskudar (TRY 15, 15 mins). The Bosphorus public ferry cruise departs Eminonu at 10:35AM (TRY 100 round trip).
Metro M2: Connects Taksim to the northern neighborhoods.
Funicular: Kabatas to Taksim (2 minutes). Karakoy to Beyoglu (same deal).
Taxis
Use BiTaksi app — it shows the meter and route, preventing the common scam of "long route" diversions. Standard meter — insist on it. Say "taksimetre" if the driver doesn't start it.
What to See
European Side — Sultanahmet
Hagia Sophia — Free entry since 2020 (now a functioning mosque). The 55m dome, Byzantine mosaics, and Islamic calligraphy coexist in one of architecture's greatest buildings. Arrive before 9AM. Closed during prayer times.
Blue Mosque — Free entry, modest dress required. The blue Iznik tiles are in the upper galleries. Partially under restoration but accessible. Outside prayer times only.
Basilica Cistern — TRY 450 entry. Underground 6th-century cistern with 336 marble columns. The Medusa head bases are at the far end. Best at opening (9AM) or after 5PM.
Topkapi Palace — TRY 450 entry, Harem extra TRY 200. The Ottoman sultans' residence for 400 years. The treasury (Spoonmaker's Diamond) and Harem are the highlights. Closed Tuesdays. Buy tickets online.
Grand Bazaar — Free entry, 4,000+ shops. Open Mon-Sat 8:30AM-7PM, closed Sundays. Start at Gate 1 (Beyazit). Haggle — offer 40-50% of asking price.
European Side — Beyoglu
Istiklal Caddesi — The main pedestrian avenue from Taksim Square to Galata. 1.4 km of shops, restaurants, consulates, and churches. The historic red tram runs down the middle.
Galata Tower — TRY 200 entry. 67m stone tower with panoramic views over the Golden Horn and Bosphorus. Go at sunset.
Karakoy — The waterfront neighborhood is Istanbul's trendiest — third-wave coffee shops, art galleries, and restaurants in converted warehouses.
Asian Side
Kadikoy — Ferry from Eminonu (TRY 15). The market streets are Istanbul's best food experience. Less touristy, better prices, authentic atmosphere.
Uskudar — The waterfront has stunning Sultanahmet views. Kuzguncuk, nearby, is a charming neighborhood of colorful houses and quiet streets.

Safety
Istanbul is generally safe. Main concerns:
Scams: The shoe-shine trick, the "friendly local" bar scam, taxi meter manipulation. Use BiTaksi, don't follow strangers to bars, and ignore anyone who "drops" something near you.
Pickpockets: Crowded T1 tram and Grand Bazaar. Keep valuables in front pockets.
Traffic: Istanbul traffic is aggressive. Cross at signals. Don't jaywalk — drivers don't yield.
