Coorg FAQs: 12 Questions About India's Coffee Country Answered
How do I get to Coorg?
From Bengaluru (most common): Drive 5-6 hours (260 km via Mysore). Or KSRTC bus to Madikeri (INR 500-800, 6 hours from Majestic bus stand). No railway station in — nearest is Mysore (120 km).
A car is strongly recommended. Attractions are spread across the district, 10-40 km apart. Hire a car with driver from Madikeri: INR 2,000-3,000/day.
Do I need a car?
Technically, KSRTC buses connect Madikeri to some attractions. But service is infrequent and doesn't cover most plantations and viewpoints. Public transport between Abbey Falls, Dubare, and Namdroling Monastery is impractical.
If you're on a tight budget, auto-rickshaws work within Madikeri town (INR 50-100). For everything else, you need wheels — either a hired car or your own vehicle.
When's the best time to visit?
October to March: Cool, clear, 15-28°C. Best visibility. Coffee harvest season (November-February) means you'll see the entire bean-to-cup process.
June to September: Monsoon. Lush, green, dramatic waterfalls at full flow. But: 3,000+ mm of rain, leech-infested trails, slippery roads, and some homestays close.
April to May: Warm (25-35°C). Pre-monsoon. Less interesting landscape but quieter.
Best single month? November. Post-monsoon green, pleasant temperatures, and coffee harvest underway.
What about the leeches?
Monsoon leeches are real. They're everywhere on forest trails from June to September. Not dangerous — they don't carry disease — but they latch onto skin, feed on blood, and leave wounds that bleed profusely when the leech is removed.
Prevention: tuck trousers into socks, apply insect repellent on footwear, carry salt or tobacco to detach them. Full-length socks are essential. Avoid open sandals on any trail.
Many visitors brave the leeches for monsoon Coorg's incredible beauty. Your call.
What's a Kodava homestay like?
Coorg is India's homestay capital. You stay in a family home on a working plantation. Your hosts are usually Kodava farming families who've lived on the land for generations.
Typical experience: arrive to coffee and snacks, afternoon plantation walk, home-cooked dinner (Kodava cuisine — pork, bamboo shoots, rice balls), morning coffee from the estate. Some homestays offer cooking classes.
Pricing: INR 1,500-4,000/night including all meals. Book 2-3 weeks ahead for weekends.

How many days do I need?
2 nights: Enough for a plantation stay, Abbey Falls, and Raja's Seat.
3 nights (recommended): Add Dubare elephants, Namdroling Monastery, and Tadiandamol trek.
4+ nights: Add Kaveri river activities, Iruppu Falls, and deeper plantation immersion.
Most Bengaluru weekenders do 2 nights. I'd push for 3 — the extra day lets the coffee pace sink in.
Is Coorg safe?
