A car is essential — public transport between attractions is very limited. Hire a car with driver from Madikeri: INR 2,000-3,000/day. Roads are winding and steep — not ideal for self-driving first-timers. Local auto-rickshaws in Madikeri town only (INR 50-100). Attractions are 10-40 km apart.
Coorg is India's homestay capital. Stay at family-run plantation homes (INR 1,500-4,000/night) for authentic Kodava meals (pandi curry — pork with kachampuli vinegar, akki roti, bamboo shoot curry). Luxury resorts like Evolve Back (INR 20,000+/night) offer spa treatments. Book 2-3 weeks ahead for weekends.
Coorg gets 3,000+ mm rain during Jun-Sep monsoon. Waterfalls are spectacular but trails get slippery and leech-infested. Carry salt or tobacco to remove leeches, wear full-length socks tucked into trousers, and use insect repellent on footwear. Despite the rain, monsoon Coorg is hauntingly beautiful — just be prepared.
The Kodava people are fiercely proud of their martial heritage. Many homes display ancestral weapons (odikathi swords). Ask permission before entering private plantations. Kodava cuisine is meat-heavy (pork is central) — vegetarian options are limited at traditional homestays. Local honey and homemade wines (from jackfruit, grape, ginger) make great gifts.
Travel GuidesHow do I get there without a car? Is monsoon worth it despite the leeches? What exactly is pandi curry? Every Coorg question you have, answered without the fluff.
StoriesI went to Coorg for the coffee. I stayed for the warrior-farmer culture, a pork curry that rewired my understanding of spice, and mornings where the mist swallowed everything except the smell of arabica.
Travel GuidesTwo misty coffee regions separated by state lines and a different vibe entirely. One has elephants and warrior culture, the other has bamboo forests and ancient caves.
