Procida is the smallest inhabited island in the Bay of Naples — 3.7 km squared of pastel-coloured fishing village perched on volcanic rock. It sits between Ischia and the mainland, 40 minutes by ferry from Naples, and sees a fraction of the tourist traffic that hits Capri or the Amalfi Coast.
Overview
Population 10,300. No cars needed (though some exist). One main road loops the island. Everything walkable in 30 minutes maximum. The economy runs on fishing, lemons, and — increasingly — tourism, though it remains low-key. Procida was named Italy's Capital of Culture for 2022, which raised its profile without fundamentally changing its character.
Best Time to Visit
May to September. The sweet spots are May-June and September — warm enough to swim (water temperature 22-26C), fewer crowds than July-August. Peak summer (mid-July to mid-August) fills the island's limited accommodation. Winter (November-March) is quiet to the point of emptiness — many restaurants and hotels close, and ferry service drops to 2-3 boats daily.
Getting There
From Naples: Caremar and SNAV ferries depart from Calata Porta di Massa terminal. Slow ferry: 60 min, EUR 15. Fast hydrofoil: 25 min, EUR 20. Departures every 1-2 hours in summer, less frequent in winter.
From Ischia: Caremar runs ferries between Procida and Ischia (25 min, EUR 10). Easy island-hopping.
From Rome: Train to Naples Centrale (70 min on Frecciarossa, EUR 20-45), then metro to Porta di Massa port (20 min), then ferry.
Important: Check winter schedules. Rough seas can cancel services. Don't plan tight connections.
Where to Stay
Budget (EUR 50-80/night)
Simple B&Bs and apartments. Often family-run, often excellent. Look for places on Via Roma or near Marina Grande for convenience. No frills, clean rooms, and occasionally a grandmother who brings you coffee.
Mid-Range (EUR 80-150/night)
Boutique guesthouses in converted fishermen's houses. Some have terraces overlooking the harbour. La Suite Hotel and Hotel La Vigna are well-reviewed.
Splurge (EUR 150-300/night)
Hotel La Casa sul Mare has rooms directly above Marina Corricella — the view is the same one that's on every Procida postcard. Book months ahead for summer.
What to Do
Marina Corricella
The heart of Procida. A crescent harbour lined with pastel fishermen's houses. Restaurants serve the morning catch. Go for lunch — a table at the water's edge, grilled fish, local white wine. Come back at sunset when the harbour light turns everything gold. This is where they filmed scenes from "Il Postino" (1994).
Terra Murata
The medieval fortified village at the island's highest point (91m). Walled against pirates, now home to the Abbazia di San Michele Arcangelo (11th century). The abbey terrace has panoramic views of Ischia, Capri, and Vesuvius. The neighbourhood's narrow alleys are some of the most photogenic on the island.
Spiaggia della Chiaia
Procida's best beach. 186 steps down between tuff cliffs (they count on the way back up). Dark volcanic sand, turquoise water, sunbed rental EUR 10. Small beach bar for drinks and snacks. Gets crowded in August — go early or late.
Vivara Nature Reserve
A tiny island connected to Procida by a pedestrian bridge. Protected nature area with walking trails through Mediterranean scrub and volcanic rock. Bird watching opportunities. Opening hours vary — check locally. Usually open weekends and some weekdays in season.
Marina Grande
The main port and commercial area. Less picturesque than Corricella but more functional — this is where you'll find the ATM, pharmacy, mini-market, and ferry ticket office. The waterfront has decent cafes for a morning espresso while watching the fishing boats.
What to Eat
Lingua di Procida: The island's signature pastry. Tongue-shaped puff pastry filled with lemon cream (made from Procida's oversized local lemons). Bar Dal Cavaliere on Via Roma makes the best version. EUR 3. Non-negotiable.
Fresh seafood: Whatever was caught that morning. Grilled calamari, branzino al limone, spaghetti with sea urchin (ricci di mare) in season. La Lampara and Caracale at Marina Corricella are reliable.
Lemon everything: Procida lemons are a PDO variety — twice normal size, incredibly aromatic. You'll find them in granita, limoncello, pasta sauces, and of course the lingua pastry.
Insalata di polpo: Octopus salad with potatoes, capers, and lemon. A Procida staple. Best at Gorgonia, a tiny place near Chiaia beach.

Safety
Procida is extremely safe — a close-knit island community with virtually no crime. The biggest risk is sunburn and the 186 steps to Chiaia beach on tired legs. No dangerous currents at the main beaches. Keep valuables secure on the beach (as anywhere) but there's no particular concern.
