The entire old town is easily walkable in 20 minutes end to end. Rent a bike from Fietspunt near the train station (~€15/day). Driving into the center is discouraged — parking garages charge €10-20/day and streets are narrow cobblestone.
Restaurants directly on Markt and Burg squares charge 30-50% more for mediocre food. Walk 2 blocks in any direction for better quality and prices. Try De Bottelier or Den Dyver for local Flemish cuisine at fair prices. A good meal with beer runs €20-30.
The Brugge City Card (€32/48hrs or €38/72hrs) includes free entry to 27 museums and attractions, one canal boat ride, and discounts. It pays for itself after 2-3 museum visits. Buy online or at the tourist office on Markt.
While Bruges has a great Trappist beer scene, don't miss local Brugse Zot (brewed in town at De Halve Maan). Order beer in a café, not at a tourist shop. Bruges has 2 Bruges beer shops on Breidelstraat for bottles to take home — much cheaper than the airport.
The cobblestone streets are slippery when wet. Wear sturdy shoes, especially at night. Cyclists share many pedestrian streets — stay alert and walk on the right side. Pickpocketing is rare but keep belongings secure in crowded squares.
Travel GuidesFrom the Belfry to the breweries, canal boats to chocolate shops — your no-nonsense guide to planning the perfect Bruges trip.
SeasonalChristmas markets on medieval squares, steaming hot chocolate in centuries-old cafes, and zero competition for the Belfry steps. Winter Bruges is a different city.
StoriesI came for the chocolate. I stayed because a wrong turn down a medieval alley at midnight led to the best beer and the most honest conversation of my entire trip.
