Sea Turtle Nesting at Bay Canh Island

Dam Trau Beach
Vietnam's most beautiful beach — a secluded crescent of golden sand beneath the airport runway (yes, planes land directly overhead). Free access. Almost no facilities, which is the point. Bring your own food and water. The beach is protected by the national park and swimming is safe in the calm season (Feb-June). 12km from Con Son town. The juxtaposition of planes and paradise is surreal.
Diving & Snorkeling at Con Dao National Park
Con Dao's marine park protects some of Vietnam's healthiest coral reefs with 1,300+ marine species. Diving: 1,500,000-2,500,000 VND (~$60-100) for two-dive trips. Snorkeling day trips to nearby islands: 500,000-800,000 VND (~$20-32). Expect sea turtles, reef sharks, barracuda, and vibrant soft corals. Con Dao Dive Center and Poulo Condore Diving are the main operators. Best visibility: March-June (20-30m).
So Ray Plantation & Forest Hike
A historic plantation site turned forest trail winding through ancient hardwood forest in the national park interior. The 10km trail passes through primary jungle, past WWII-era relics, and to a viewpoint overlooking the archipelago. Free with national park entry (40,000 VND). Bring water, insect repellent, and start early (7AM) to avoid midday heat. A ranger guide is recommended (200,000 VND).
Hang Duong Cemetery & Vo Thi Sau Shrine
The largest cemetery for Vietnamese political prisoners, with over 20,000 graves (most unmarked). Vo Thi Sau, a teenage resistance fighter executed in 1952, is buried here and venerated as a national heroine. Locals visit her grave nightly to burn incense. Free entry, open 24 hours. Immigration is processed at your entry point (typically Ho Chi Minh City), not on Con Dao. Print your e-visa as internet is unreliable on the island.

Flights from Ho Chi Minh City Are the Best Option
Bamboo Airways and VASCO fly from Ho Chi Minh City to Con Dao (VCS) daily — 45 minutes, 1,500,000-3,000,000 VND (~$60-120) round trip. Book weeks in advance as flights are small planes (70 seats) that sell out fast. A high-speed ferry from Vung Tau (Ba Ria province) takes 3.5 hours and costs 500,000-800,000 VND but only runs when seas are calm (typically February-June).
Motorbike Is Essential on the Island
Con Dao has no public transport and no Grab. Rent a motorbike (150,000-200,000 VND/day / ~$6-8) from your hotel or shops on Nguyen Hue street. The 28km ring road around Con Son island is scenic and well-paved with minimal traffic. An electric scooter option is emerging. Carry your own fuel — there's only one gas station in town.
Budget
Prices Are Higher Than Mainland Vietnam
Everything is shipped to the island, so expect 30-50% premium over mainland prices. Budget guesthouses: 400,000-600,000 VND/night (~$16-24). Local restaurant meals: 60,000-120,000 VND. The Six Senses Con Dao is world-class luxury ($500+/night). Mid-range: Poulo Condor boutique hotel (1,000,000 VND / ~$40). Bring snacks from the mainland as grocery options are limited.
Safety
The Remoteness Is Real
Con Dao's hospital is basic — serious medical emergencies require helicopter evacuation to Ho Chi Minh City (2+ hours). Ensure comprehensive travel insurance with medevac coverage. The nearest decompression chamber for diving accidents is also in HCMC. Cell service (Viettel works best) covers Con Son town but is spotty elsewhere on the islands.
Local Customs
National Park Rules Are Strictly Enforced
Con Dao National Park covers 80% of the archipelago. Littering, coral collection, fishing in protected zones, and drone flights are prohibited and carry real fines. You need a national park permit (40,000 VND/day) for hiking and beach access on outer islands. All island boat trips must be arranged through licensed operators registered with the park office.
