Dubai is tolerant but has strict laws. Public displays of affection beyond hand-holding can result in fines. Dress modestly in malls and public areas (cover shoulders and knees). Swimwear is only for beaches and pools. During Ramadan, eating, drinking, and smoking in public during daylight hours is prohibited. Photography of people (especially women) without permission is illegal.
Alcohol is only sold in licensed hotel bars, restaurants, and clubs. You cannot buy alcohol from supermarkets without a liquor license. Public intoxication and drink-driving (zero tolerance) are criminal offenses. During Ramadan, alcohol service hours are reduced, and some venues close entirely. Never carry alcohol in public or across emirates.

From June to September, outdoor temperatures regularly exceed 45°C with extreme humidity. Heatstroke is a real risk. Stay hydrated (carry water everywhere), avoid prolonged outdoor exposure between 10AM-4PM, and wear sunscreen. Most of Dubai is designed around air-conditioned spaces. If you visit in summer, plan indoor activities during peak heat hours.
I showed up ready to dismiss the whole place as a soulless shopping mall with a skyline. I was wrong in ways that surprised me.
The world's tallest building is fine. But the AED 1 abra ride, the Al Fahidi wind towers, and a shawarma in Deira are the real Dubai.
One is all skyscrapers and shopping. The other has the Louvre and a Grand Mosque that stops you in your tracks. Here's how to choose — or how to do both.
