One of America's most spectacular drives — an 80km engineering marvel crossing the Continental Divide at Logan Pass (2,026m). Free with park entry. Open mid-July to mid-October (weather dependent). Allow 3-4 hours with stops. Vehicle reservations required during peak season ($2 booking fee). Stop at The Loop, Bird Woman Falls overlook, and Wild Goose Island viewpoint.
The park's most accessible glacier, reached via a stunning 11.2km out-and-back trail from Many Glacier Hotel. Elevation gain 490m. Difficulty: strenuous. Allow 6-8 hours roundtrip. Free. Trail passes four turquoise lakes and the glacier itself — one of only 25 remaining in the park (down from 150 in 1850). Bring layers, the glacier area is cold even in summer.
The 'Switzerland of North America' — a dramatic valley on the park's east side with towering peaks, pristine lakes, and the highest concentration of wildlife. Stay at the historic Many Glacier Hotel (from $250/night, book 6+ months ahead). Best area for spotting grizzly bears, moose, and mountain goats. Trails: Iceberg Lake (15km, moderate), Ptarmigan Tunnel (16km, strenuous).
A 4.5km out-and-back boardwalk trail from Logan Pass Visitor Center offering panoramic views of Hidden Lake and the Bearhat Mountain ridgeline. Elevation gain 140m. Easy to moderate. Allow 2 hours. Free with park entry. Snow lingers on the trail into July. Mountain goats frequently spotted along the boardwalk. Arrive before 9AM to find parking at Logan Pass.
The park's largest lake — 16km long with famously colorful pebble shores and mirror-like reflections of surrounding peaks. Free access. The historic Lake McDonald Lodge (1913, Swiss chalet style) is worth visiting even if not staying. Kayak and canoe rentals available ($20-25/hour). Drive the North Shore road for quieter viewpoints. Sunrise is spectacular from Apgar Village.
A thrilling 18.8km point-to-point trail carved into the Garden Wall cliff face, starting at Logan Pass. The first 1km has cable handholds along a sheer drop — not for the faint-hearted. Moderate difficulty, 240m elevation gain. Allow 6-8 hours. Ends at The Loop shuttle stop on Going-to-the-Sun Road. Free park shuttle back. Wildflower meadows and bighorn sheep throughout.
A quieter, less-visited area on the park's southeast side, sacred to the Blackfeet Nation. Scenic boat tours on Two Medicine Lake ($15 adults, 45 min) connect to the trail to Twin Falls (3km easy walk). Running Eagle Falls is a unique 'trick falls' — water flows both over and through the cliff. Great for solitude seekers escaping Going-to-the-Sun Road crowds.

From late May to mid-September, you need a timed-entry vehicle reservation ($2) to drive Going-to-the-Sun Road between 6AM-3PM. Reservations open in batches — check recreation.gov in March and late April. Without one, arrive before 6AM or after 3PM. The free park shuttle (July-Labor Day) is an alternative but fills up fast.
Glacier spans 4,100 sq km. Driving from West Glacier to Many Glacier takes 2.5+ hours (no direct route through the park in winter). Base yourself on the west side (Apgar, West Glacier) for Lake McDonald and Going-to-the-Sun Road, east side (Many Glacier, St. Mary) for Grinnell Glacier and wildlife. Ideally spend 3-5 days to cover both sides.
Glacier has one of the highest grizzly bear densities in the Lower 48. Carry bear spray ($10-12 rental at park stores) on every hike, hike in groups of 3+, and make noise on blind corners. Store all food in bear boxes at campsites. If you encounter a grizzly, never run — back away slowly, speak calmly. Black bears are also common.
In-park lodges (Many Glacier Hotel, Lake McDonald Lodge, Glacier Park Lodge) sell out 6-12 months in advance. Budget alternatives: campgrounds ($10-23/night, some first-come-first-served), Whitefish lodging (40 min drive, from $120/night), or Kalispell motels (50 min, from $90). Columbia Falls has the cheapest options near the West entrance.
Despite summer starting in June, the full Going-to-the-Sun Road typically doesn't open until mid-July due to snowplowing at higher elevations. Check the NPS website for real-time road status. If visiting early summer, lower-elevation areas (Apgar, Two Medicine, Many Glacier) are still accessible and less crowded.
Non-US citizens need a valid visa or ESTA (Visa Waiver Program, $21, apply at least 72 hours before travel). The park borders Canada — if combining with Waterton Lakes National Park (Alberta), you'll need proper documentation for both countries. The Chief Mountain border crossing (seasonal, June-September) is the direct route.
