Australian beaches have powerful rip currents. Always swim between the red and yellow flags where lifeguards patrol (typically 8AM-5PM). If caught in a rip, swim parallel to the shore — never against it. Bluebottle jellyfish wash up occasionally; their sting is painful but not dangerous.
Australia has the highest skin cancer rate in the world. The UV index regularly hits 11+ (extreme). Wear SPF 50+ sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Reapply every 2 hours when swimming. You will burn in 15 minutes without protection, even on overcast days.

If visiting more than one theme park, the Village Roadshow pass (Movie World + Sea World + Wet'n'Wild, 7 days) costs AUD 149 versus AUD 109 each individually. Dreamworld has its own pass system. Buy online — gate prices are always higher. Avoid school holiday periods (late Dec, Easter, late June).
RSL and surf life saving clubs (Burleigh, Mermaid Beach, Currumbin) serve generous pub meals for AUD 15-25 — half the price of tourist restaurants. Most welcome visitors. The Burleigh Heads SLSC bistro has ocean views and AUD 18 schnitzels. Sign in at reception with ID.
Australia has extremely strict biosecurity. Declare all food, plant material, and animal products on your arrival card. Undeclared items can result in AUD 660+ fines. Hiking boots should be clean — mud with foreign soil can trigger quarantine issues.
SeasonalQueensland doesn't do winter the way the rest of Australia does. 22°C, sunny, empty theme parks, and humpback whales breaching off the coast. This is peak Gold Coast season.

TipsThe UV index here hits 11+. The rip currents don't care about your swimming confidence. And the theme park passes have a hack. Here's what I learned the hard way.
