Travel Tips

Visa & Entry

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

Most nationalities need an ETA before arrival, applied for online at eta.gov.lk. The 30-day tourist ETA costs around $50 (double-entry) for most Western passports; children under 12 are free. Apply directly through the official government site to avoid third-party agents who charge a markup.

Local Customs

Temple Dress Code & Buddha Photo Rule

At the Temple of the Tooth and all Buddhist sites, cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes and hats, and never turn your back to a Buddha statue for a selfie. Posing with your back to (or pointing at) a Buddha image is illegal in Sri Lanka and has led to tourist arrests. Buy a cheap sarong from shops near the entrance if underdressed.

transport

The Scenic Hill-Country Train

The Colombo-Kandy train (2.5-3 hrs) and the onward Kandy-Ella line are among the world's most beautiful rail journeys, winding past tea plantations and waterfalls. Reserve 2nd/3rd-class observation seats up to 30 days ahead via the official booking site, as they sell out fast in high season. Sit on the right side heading to Ella for the best views.

Tuk-Tuks & the PickMe App

Download the PickMe app (Sri Lanka's Uber equivalent) for metered tuk-tuks and cars — it removes haggling and quotes fair fares. For street tuk-tuks, agree the price before boarding; a ride across central Kandy should be 300-500 LKR.

Safety

Beware the 'Perahera' & 'Free Guide' Scams

Touts near the temple may claim a special ceremony or 'the last day of a festival' is on and offer to guide you to a shop or gem 'showroom' for commission. Politely decline unsolicited guides. Sri Lanka's famous gem trade also attracts scams — never buy stones as an 'investment' from a stranger.

Budget

Eat Where the Locals Do

A rice-and-curry lunch packet ('lunch packet') from a local eatery costs 300-600 LKR and comes with 4-5 vegetable curries. Kandy Muslim Hotel and the food stalls near the market are cheap and excellent. Tap water is not safe to drink — buy sealed bottled water (~100 LKR/litre).
