The old town below has narrow alleys, ancient chortens, and the Leh Mosque and Jama Masjid — evidence of Ladakh's diverse heritage. Allow 2 hours for palace + old town walk.

An optical illusion where the road appears to go uphill but vehicles roll 'upward' when in neutral — the landscape tricks your perception. Free and always open. Nearby, the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers (two different colored waters merging) is genuinely beautiful. Both are on the Leh-Kargil highway, 30km west of Leh. Stop on the way to or from the airport. Allow 30 minutes total.
Fly into Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL) at 3,500m. The MOST important day — rest, hydrate, and let your body adjust to altitude. No exertion.
Flight arrival and transfer to hotel(30 minutes)
Airport is 5km from Leh. Hotels send pickup. Pre-book accommodation — high season fills up
Complete rest at hotel(4 hours)
CRITICAL: Do not exert yourself. No climbing stairs unnecessarily, no alcohol, no heavy meals. Drink 3-4 liters of water. Take Diamox (250mg) if your doctor approved it. Headache and slight breathlessness are normal
Gentle walk on Leh Main Bazaar(1 hour)
Only if feeling okay after 4+ hours of rest. The main bazaar is flat and walkable. Buy water, snacks, and sunscreen (SPF 50+ essential — UV is 50-60% stronger at altitude). Don't push it
Early dinner at Gesmo Restaurant(1 hour)
Simple Ladakhi-Tibetan food. Try thukpa (noodle soup, 150 INR) — light and warming. Avoid heavy food on day 1. Sleep early
Second acclimatization day with gentle sightseeing in Leh town. Still taking it easy — short walks, frequent breaks.
Leh Palace(1.5 hours)

Shanti Stupa sunset(1.5 hours)
Japanese-built white peace stupa on a hilltop. Free. Drive up (auto 200 INR) rather than walking the 500+ steps at this altitude. The 360-degree sunset view over Leh is the best in the region

Early morning at Thiksey Monastery(2 hours)

Small village near Stok Palace (the current royal family's residence). Simple Ladakhi restaurant — dal and rice 150-200 INR. The palace museum (100 INR) has royal jewelry and thangkas

Depart by 7AM. Inner Line Permit required (apply in Leh, 400 INR). The road climbs to 5,359m — bundle up, wind chill drops well below zero. Do NOT linger at the top if you feel dizzy. Tea stalls serve chai and Maggi. Hire a car and driver for 2 days (6,000-8,000 INR)
Photo stop at Khardung La summit(15 minutes)
Quick photo with the famous sign. Do not stay more than 15 minutes at this altitude. The descent into Nubra is spectacular — green valley appearing from barren mountains
Hunder Sand Dunes and camel ride(2 hours)
Cold-desert sand dunes with rare double-humped Bactrian camels. Short ride 300-500 INR. The contrast of sand dunes against snow-capped Himalayas is surreal
Overnight at Hunder guesthouse(overnight)
Simple guesthouses 1,500-3,000 INR including dinner and breakfast. No phone signal in most of Nubra. Enjoy the silence
Explore Diskit Monastery and the valley floor before driving back to Leh.

Nubra Valley floor walk(1 hour)
Walk through apricot orchards and barley fields along the Shyok River. In summer, the orchards are laden with fruit — locals sell dried apricots (100-200 INR per bag)
Drive back to Leh via Khardung La(5 hours)
Return the same route. Afternoon crossing is slightly warmer. Arrive Leh by 5PM
Evening rest and dinner in Leh(2 hours)
Tibetan Kitchen for momos and thukpa (200-300 INR per person). Rest — tomorrow is another early start

Drive to Pangong Lake via Chang La (5,360m)(5 hours)
160km from Leh. Inner Line Permit required. Depart by 6AM. Chang La pass is the second-highest you'll cross. The road alternates between paved and dirt. Hire car/driver for the day (5,000-7,000 INR)
Pangong Lake — Spangmik viewpoint(3 hours)
The lake changes from deep blue to turquoise to green through the day. Made famous by 3 Idiots. Walk along the shore — the water is crystal clear and impossibly blue. No swimming (too cold, 4,350m altitude). No phone signal
Optional: Overnight lakeside camp(overnight)
Lakeside camps at Spangmik or Man village — 2,000-4,000 INR/night with meals. The star-gazing at Pangong is extraordinary — zero light pollution. Or return to Leh same day (long, tiring 10-hour round trip)
Drive back from Pangong (if overnighted) or take a final morning in Leh before heading to the airport.
Return from Pangong to Leh (if camping)(5 hours)
Depart by 7AM. The return drive in morning light reveals different colors on the lake
Last shopping at Leh Main Bazaar(1 hour)
Pashmina shawls (verify quality — real pashmina is warm to touch and light), Ladakhi jewelry, dried apricots, and Tibetan singing bowls. Bargain respectfully
Transfer to IXL airport(20 minutes)
Flights from Leh are early morning (often 5-7AM) — check your timing. Airlines sometimes cancel due to weather. Keep a flexible schedule. Carry warm layers for the pre-dawn airport wait
Indian nationals need no visa but require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, Tso Moriri, and the Hanle area. Apply online through the Ladakh UT portal or at the DC Office in Leh (400 INR, issued same day with ID/passport copies). Foreign nationals need both an Indian visa and a Protected Area Permit (PAP) — must travel in groups of 2+ with a registered tour operator.
Leh sits at 3,500m — altitude sickness affects most visitors. MUST rest for 24-48 hours upon arrival: no exertion, no alcohol, drink 3-4 liters of water. Take Diamox (250mg) starting a day before arrival if your doctor approves. Symptoms: headache, nausea, dizziness. If you get breathless at rest or confused, descend immediately — it can be fatal. Never fly in and drive to a higher pass the same day.
At 3,500m+ with clear skies, UV radiation is 50-60% stronger than at sea level. Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen every 2 hours, wear UV-blocking sunglasses (snow blindness is real), and cover your neck and ears. Even overcast days cause severe sunburn. Lip balm with SPF is essential — lips crack and bleed within a day without it.
Flights from Delhi (1.5 hours, often 5,000-12,000 INR) are quick but offer no acclimatization. The Manali-Leh highway (474km, 2 days, open June-October) and Srinagar-Leh highway (434km, 2 days, open May-November) are epic road trips. Shared taxis on both routes run 2,000-3,000 INR per person. Pre-book vehicles in Leh for sightseeing — self-drive is challenging due to altitude and road conditions.
Carry enough cash for your entire trip. Leh has ATMs (SBI, J&K Bank) but they frequently run dry, especially June-August. No ATMs exist beyond Leh (Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri). UPI and cards accepted only at larger hotels and some Leh restaurants. Budget 3,000-5,000 INR/day for guesthouse, meals, and local transport. Petrol costs more here than plains — factor in fuel surcharges.
Remove shoes before entering prayer halls. Walk clockwise around stupas, mani walls, and prayer wheels. Do not touch or sit on prayer cushions reserved for monks. Photography is usually allowed but ask first — some monasteries prohibit photos of sacred statues. A small donation (50-100 INR) at the altar is customary. Dress modestly — shorts are frowned upon.
StoriesThe headache started at Khardung La. The silence started at Pangong. Somewhere between the two, I stopped trying to describe Ladakh and just let it happen.
StoriesDay 1: headache. Day 3: monastery prayers. Day 6: Pangong at 3AM under the Milky Way. A journal from the roof of the world.
Travel GuidesThe world's highest motorable passes, a frozen river trek, motorcycle routes above 5,000m, and turquoise lakes where the stars look fake. Ladakh is the adventure capital nobody talks about.
