Switzerland is in the Schengen Area (though not in the EU). US, UK, Canadian, and Australian citizens can visit visa-free for 90 days. ETIAS authorization (€7) required from 2026 for non-EU visitors.
Budget €50-80/day for food alone. A restaurant lunch costs CHF 25-40, coffee CHF 5-6, beer CHF 7-9. Save money: buy groceries at Coop or Migros supermarkets, eat at self-service restaurants like Manora (in Manor department store), and get the Swiss Travel Pass for transport savings.
Swiss tap water is among the cleanest in the world. Refill your bottle from any tap or public fountain (unless marked 'kein Trinkwasser'). Ordering water in restaurants — always specify 'Hahnenwasser' (tap water) or you'll get an expensive bottle (CHF 5-8).
The Swiss Travel Pass (from CHF 244/3 days) covers all trains, buses, boats, and city transport plus free museum entry and 50% off mountain railways (Pilatus, Rigi, Titlis). Buy before arriving — only sold to non-Swiss residents. Pays for itself within 2 mountain trips.
Mountain summits can be socked in with fog even on sunny days in the city. Check the webcams on pilatus.ch or rigi.ch before buying tickets. Morning is generally clearest. If clouds are low, do the old town and lake instead — don't waste CHF 70+ on foggy views.
At 2,000m+ elevation, UV radiation is significantly stronger. Sunburn happens fast, even on cool days. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a warm layer — temperatures drop ~6°C per 1,000m of altitude. Stay hydrated and take the altitude adjustment slowly.
Travel GuidesTwo mountains, a fjord-like lake, historic steamboats, and the world's steepest cogwheel railway — Lucerne's natural setting is Switzerland concentrated.
TipsSwitzerland is expensive. Lucerne is expensive even by Swiss standards. But with the right passes, timing, and food strategy, you can see everything without selling a kidney.
Travel GuidesTwo Swiss cities, both gorgeous, both expensive, both surrounded by mountains. But they offer fundamentally different experiences. Here's how to choose.
