The beating heart of Tahitian life — a two-story covered market open daily selling tropical fruits, fresh fish, vanilla beans, monoi oil, woven hats, and black pearl jewelry. The upper floor has affordable food stalls serving poisson cru and chow mein for 800-1,200 XPF ($7-11). Open Mon-Sat 5 AM-5 PM, Sun 4-8 AM.

A stunning 133-meter waterfall in a lush valley behind Papeete. The hike is 4-5 hours round trip through bamboo forest and river crossings — a moderate-to-challenging trail. Bring water shoes for stream crossings. Permit required from the Mairie (town hall) — free. Best after rain when flow is strongest.

One of the heaviest waves in the world, located on Tahiti Iti's southwest coast. Olympic surfing venue for Paris 2024. Watching from a boat is possible for non-surfers ($50-80 boat trip). The village is a 1.5-hour drive from Papeete plus a boat ride. For expert surfers only — the reef is extremely shallow.

Tahiti's volcanic origin creates dramatic black sand beaches. Papenoo Beach on the north coast and Taharuu Beach on the south coast are the most accessible — both free, with good bodyboarding waves. The contrast of black sand, green palms, and blue ocean is stunning for photography. Allow 1-2 hours each.

Located in Mataiea, 51 km south of Papeete, where Gauguin lived and painted from 1891-1893. The museum showcases reproductions (originals are in global museums) alongside his biography and Tahitian period context. Combined with the adjacent Harrison Smith Botanical Garden. Entry: ~600 XPF ($5). Allow 1.5 hours.
Tahiti produces some of the world's finest vanilla — richer and more complex than Madagascar's. Visit a vanilla plantation on Tahiti Nui's east coast to see the hand-pollination process and taste fresh vanilla. Tours: 3,000-5,000 XPF ($27-45). Buy beans directly — far cheaper than export prices. Allow 1-2 hours.

Every evening from 6 PM, Place Vai'ete on the Papeete waterfront fills with food trucks serving everything from Tahitian poisson cru and grilled mahi-mahi to Chinese stir-fry and crepes. A full meal costs 1,000-2,000 XPF ($9-18) — the best value dining in French Polynesia. Bring cash.

US, EU, UK, Canadian, and Australian citizens can stay 90 days without a visa. However, French Polynesia is NOT in the Schengen Area — a Schengen visa does not work here. You need a valid passport with 6+ months validity. Direct flights from Los Angeles (8 hours), Auckland (5 hours), and Tokyo (11 hours).
Compared to Bora Bora, Tahiti is significantly cheaper. Pensions (guesthouses) from $80-150/night, les roulottes meals for $10-15, rental cars from $50/day. Use Tahiti as your base for day trips to Moorea (30-min ferry, $15 each way). Budget $100-150/day for comfortable mid-range travel.
Tahitian black pearls are significantly cheaper in Papeete's market and pearl shops than at resort boutiques in Bora Bora. A quality loose pearl starts around 5,000-15,000 XPF ($45-135). The Robert Wan Pearl Museum in Papeete is free and educates you on quality grading before you buy.
Le Truck (local bus) runs around Tahiti Nui but is slow and infrequent. Rent a car ($50-80/day) to explore the coastal road — the full circle of Tahiti Nui takes 3-4 hours with stops. Drive is on the right side. Gas stations are scarce on the east coast — fill up in Papeete. Roads are generally good.
Many travelers treat Tahiti as just a layover — a common mistake. Spend at least 2-3 days here. The interior valleys, waterfalls, and Tahiti Iti's wild south coast are spectacular and rarely visited. Papeete's food scene (les roulottes, the market) is the best in French Polynesia. Tahiti has soul; Bora Bora has resorts.
Dengue fever outbreaks occur periodically. Use DEET-based repellent, especially at dawn and dusk. Tahiti has no malaria. Pharmacies (pharmacies de garde) are well-stocked and the healthcare system follows French standards. Tap water is safe to drink in Papeete but not always in rural areas.
SeasonalDry season surf competitions and whale watching vs wet season waterfalls and half-price pensions — here's when to book (and when to bring a really good rain jacket).
